Yes, statistics are just a measure of covering risk. They're not particularly necessary, btu they can give you an edge. Personally I think fundamental analysis of management, balance, cash flow, income statement are all more important than statistical trends of ret urns, stock prices, macro economics news catalysts etc.
Depending on your time frame statistics can be very useful or not at all. The shorter the time period the less quantitative you can be, although I've found a way around this limitation.
