Ask your answers. Prefarably about Russia's internal politics and geopolitical stance.
I was the OP of a thread titled "What is Putin's ultimate goal" a while back if anyone remembers.
I'll try to reply in most expanded form as possible.
My political views are in moderate (partly lib - partly socialist) conservative spectrum.
I work as a web-programmer. Married, have a child.

>Does the Russian media ever talk about Canadian/American militarization of the Arctic?
If anything of note concerning the Arctic happens, then yes. More often they report about how Canada and the US are concerned about Russia's increasing presense there.

>How long can the Putin regime last with the current sanctions? Indefinitely?
Sanctions is the lesser problem of Russia's economy. The drop in oil price and structural problems of Russia's macroeconomy is what really undermines Russia.
Will Putin stay indefinately. I don;t know. He may stay for the 2nd (4th) term after the 2018 presidential elections, but there is a chance he'll step down to a successor due to old age or Kremlin's internal power struggle.

Russia doesn't care about Baltics. Kremlin got over their inclusion in NATO long ago. It's a strengthening of NATO's contingent there what concerns Putin and the elites the most.
Other than that Russia doesn't really have any interest in sprats. The recent hysteria around the Baltics is a thing because NATO finally found a long wished boogeyman. The danger here is that at one point tensions may spiral out of control and it won't be some green men in the area but border-related incidents like above the Baltic sea.

>what is the public/general view of the outside world for the common Russian?
Average Russian is patriotic. In this sense we're like Americans. We consider our country as number one in many areas and general population believes we can outperform anyone in any field if we consolidate and really try to.
Other than that a Russian is tolerant of other cultures unless they try to impose their ways and perspective. Contrary to what the Western mass media may tell you. Russians don't hate the West. We identify as Europeans, certainly not Asians, but as a seperate unique civillization with different mentality and a different outlook on the world. Many Russians are eager to promote it, like Americans do with democracy and freedom, which I believe is a negative trait.

BRICS is a political club of nations that share their discontent with unipolar world. Russia hoped that this club would also promote a tighter economic cooperation, but it never happened which is sad.

I'd say no.
1 room flat in Saint-Petersburg may cost from 1,5 mil rubles for constructing commieblocks, and around 2,5-2,8 in ready commieblocks. Flats close to downtowns are even more costly. Average wages are around 35k-40k in Moscow, 30-35 in Saint-Petersburg and economically developed oblasts, 25k in slightly less developed, 20k on average round the country and from 10k to 15k in poor regions. The leaders are oil-digging-refining regions. Average wages go from 50k and up there, but the cost of living is also higher.
In some problematic economic areas wages do get withold, for what period - varies wildly. But it doesn't get too extreme. Extreme cases of holding out on salaries get a wide mass-media coverage and attention of Kremlin.

Opposition is non-existent.
See, to be in opposition in Russia is to be anti-Russia.
Some oppositioners that call themselves liberals, in reality have total intolerance to pluralism and the freedom of expressing views which do not comply with theirs. The second problem with opposition - they can't unite. They are always at each other's throats for whatever reason. Third problem - often when they shout about the corruption, it turns out that they are just as bad or even worse. Fourth problem - they hate their own people and will do anything to get in favor of the globalist elites. All in all, they are clowns incapable of any consolidated action and are not worty of any trust.
I am not mentioning anarchists, anarcho-communists, greenies - their support is non-existent and marginal.

You assume that everybody is brainwashed because "Western mass media"

But you don't apply the same logic to yourself. The media in your country is state controlled and is feeding you propaganda and a world view that serves the interests of the Kremlin and not the people.
>>
>>78008627
As for the "approved opposition" that resides in state Duma (parliament), here's a quick rundown:
United Russia - Kremlin's party, led by Dmitry Medvedev, ex pres and current prime minister. Ideology? Non-existant apart from patriotism. All they do is support Kremlin's initiatives and propose laws designed in Kremlin. The policies they promote may vary from liberal, to socialist. But generally they are considered right-centrist (right means liberal in Russian politics). Consistent 40-50% support among the population.
KPRF - communists. May be the only party worth a shit in Russia but they're too in bed with Kremlin in a sense they don't always support Kremlin's law initiatives and often oppose United Russia's but they never criticize Putin. They don't want to struggle for power. The reason behind KPRF's existense is a mystery to me. Consistent 20-25% support among the population.
LDPR - "liberal" "democratic" party. First non-communist party in Russia which is more than 35 years old. Led by a fuhrer type figure Vladimir Zhirinovsky. Basically a one man party. No consistent ideology, a lot of populist slogans. Often support United Russia and Kremlin, sometimes disagrees. Zhirinovsky is famous for being a showman, for giving accurate predictions and for "telling everyone like it is". He ran for pres 3 times or more. Always finished 3rd or 4th. Consistent 8-10% support among the population for this party.
The Just Russia - a splinter party of United Russia which says it all, although more left-leaning. Totally worthless. Not worthy of mention. 5-7% of people support them.

However Russia is a very diverse place. In poorer regions I believe crime is a problem. It's not as bad as the West paints it, but not as good as it could have been. Stats say it all. All of those crime rates mostly to poverty and alcohol consumption.

There's little indication. But it's the tiny details.
From recent:
Putin has created his personal army - the RosGuard and has set his closest friend as it's head.
General knowledge is that there are two groups:
Siloviki or hawks. Ex KGB/FSB/Army servicemen which are all for more involvement of government in economy and internal affairs.
And liveral economists or Saint-Petersburg economic scholars. They lean towards liberal policies, cutting welfare and army spending and integration of Russia into the global economy.

Russians don't give a shit who's going to be the next POTUS. It's simply not our concern. I doubt there is still a people naive enough to think that US policy towards Russia depends on current talking head in White House.
>News tells me so.
They're lying. Even our state-owned TV channel is neutral on that matter.
>Also, why have you not kicked Chechnya out?
Because Chechnya was de-facto independent in 1996-1999. It doesn't ended wery well, because wretched hive of gangsters and terrorists was spreading radical islamism and crime to Dagestan, Ingushetia and other Kavkaz regions, culminating on their direct armed invasion in Dagestan, which caused Second Chechen War. And Chechnya now is not a problem - it's all quiet there, contrary to Dagestan and Ingushetia.

What are the cases where the citizens are treated badly?
I was at a bar with my friend the other day and we got to talking a bit about Russia -- he's a poli sci graduate and says that Russia is basically is a shithole. I thought the same though for perhaps different reasons, but I guess now I was fighting with ghosts; I don't really know what it's like over there. In particular it's surprising to me that you say the government is basically trying to do good. I was under the impression that it was quite a lot worse. Everything I've read about Russia paints your government as terrible. EVERYTHING
My friend said there was some sort of power struggle after '92 and Putin and friends won out, and ever since it's been blatant corruption. I heard people were really cynical because it was common knowledge that the government lied and stole. What was it like after the USSR collapsed?

Great nation with rich culture and history, big potential. As for alliance - it's mostly on words and paper. China isn't really interested in cooperating with Russia as much as with the US.

I think Russians are tired of wars and would be glad to be just left alone. However, personally I would never trust US any time soon in case any "warming" is just another trick to make us open up and get more vulnerable again. We've seen this many times in the past 30 years already.
>>
>>78013639
>Everything I've read about Russia paints your government as terrible. EVERYTHING
Does that surprise you? Like... really?
No, it's not a shithole. It's not India, It's not Africa, It's not Ukraine, It's not Mexico.
Russia is a Eastern-European country with a quality of living like in Poland (pre-2013) or Romania (now).

Bad cases of treatement by the govt include
unfair rigged court decisions
use of excess force, or unlawful actions by the police
general cases of corruption
etc etc

>What was it like after the USSR collapsed?
Complete and utter chaos. Total desintegration of social institutes. Just look at Ukraine. That's a good example.

>Oh, and why did you guys go into Ukraine? Do you think Russia will hang on to the Crimea in the long term? What do Russians and the Russian government think of Ukraine?
We go in Ukraine because there are our people being discriminated (or so general population thinks) because it's historic lands of origin of our state. Russians think hohols are stupid but still perceive them as lesser brother-nation. Government is ready to cooperate with Ukies but only when they stop shitting on themselves and Russia-Ukraine relations.
>>
>>78014005
>What would it take for Russia to join EU?
Desintegration.
>Do you think it's possible.
The way Russia is now?
No, it's not. Because both parties don't want it.
At some point Russia did want to join but the offer never came.
>>

>>
>>78014675
>Do gays get beaten up on a regular basis in bigger cities or are people more of the "don't annoy me with that shit and I won't beat you up" type?
Bigger cities actually more tolerant.
It's generally a great idea to keep your sexuality to yourself. Even if you admit you're gay, people won't instantly become hostile unless you start demanding shit like rights, recognition, or trying to persuade that being gay is "normal".
>>
>>78014707
>If I lived in Russia and was a member of the "United Russia" party, would people be even 1% less likely to fuck with you for nepotistic reasons?

If you would be a common party member, then most people would probably look past your party membership if you really gave them some problems.
>>
>>78007797
In some places yes. Russian law prohibits killing stray animals. Because of such law it is very sensitive subject. Formally they are captured, sterilized and released back (i don't know other countries with such retarded handling of stray animals). In practice such programs don't work. There are groups of vigilantes who poison street animals. When SHTF officials start eradicating programs like during Sochi Olympics despite the law. Rich capital cities now switching from sterilization to detention of captured stray animals and problem lessened there but in poor areas it may remain great problem.

Well, it was never hard to be skeptical of competing international politics, ie good guys vs evil narrative, but I just thought it was a shitty poor place to be, what with the whole communism thing, then the collapse, and I figured that it has then been a government for the few at the expense of the many.
Are you gonna tell me now that the soviet union was actually a pretty alright place to live for the average person now? I mean, I'm sure exaggerations were made seeing as how propaganda was produced by both sides, but was it really alright? In my opinion it seemed to be worse than nazism by far.

As an economist that follows you I can answer it a bit.

You don't need to formally pegg ruble to gold, it is enough to continue to buy it up and increase your stash. That is a very long term process, you intend to buy it up for at least 20 years into the future.

Why?

Because the more ones country/central bank has gold as a percentage of total emission of money the bigger the cushion to soften the blow if $ gets into serious trouble.

And abolishing central banks? Sergei Glazyev, pls. That is Alex Jones tier.

Valeriya Nabulina and Alexei Kudrin are smart and capable. Let them do their job.

>In my opinion it seemed to be worse than nazism by far
Was nazism even bad? For Germans I mean pre WWII.

>Do people in Russia think the holodomor happened? Is it treated like the jewish nazi holocaust?
No and yes in a sense that as pol says, holocaust never happened. So did holodomor - it didn't happen.

The youth because no real perspectives for an average person.
Pensioners and veterans because compared to how people live in the West their lives are shit. And those people won WWII when pensioners in Germany lost but live happily.
Social workers because low wages.

Yes, of course famine in USSR happened. It affected many people in modern Ukraine, Kazahstan and Russia. Did muh Holodomor aka Ukrainian Shoah of deliberate extermination of poor freedom-loving Ukrainians happened? No.

2 It is indeed a schizophrenia if that's the case. Russian's criticize the govt all the time in private, but I highly doubt such people would be overly patriotic. Only if it concernes sports since it doesn't involve internal politics.
3. A just competition. Russia doesn't see it as a threat. Well maybe the elites do, but they provide a different perspective to the populace.

What leaders aren't corrupt?
It's wrong on many details like some dates, Grozniy was founded by Russians not "conquered", muh genocides - yeah, that's why there are like 200 nationalities living in Russia for hundreds of years still. Huge security apparatus was founded to counter liberalism and revolutionary movements in main Russia itself since early 19 century, big army is a given and it dealt with local revolts. Eastern expansion was because why the fuck not? There wasn't much resistance but decent profits. Western expansion was to gain access to seas and become relevant and then later to remove kebab and unite our Slavic brothers.
Russia has always been authoritarian even before it got big.
>>

My interpretation of what goes on with russian history is that other 'large' European countries constantly apply political and economic pressure, and exploit internal corruption when they are able to, to incite these problems.

I think the ultimate goal is to send russia into disarray to chip away at that juicy land mass.

that's what I think anyway.

They have discredited themselves too many times. They don't understand their own people. They don't know what Russians want. They live in late 80s-early 90's Perestroika liberal dogmas. They hate everything that has any resemblance to a strong state which USSR was (on the surface at least) like the army, police, any for of government control (even when it's objectively needed), social support it provides. They deny Russia any place in foreign affairs and indirectly advocate for total submission to the status quo and current world order. They call themselves democrats and liberals yet they have more fascist dictatorship tendencies than Putin, placing themselves above the "dark and uneducated population" (in USSR more than 90% people read books and around 75% have graduated from universities) and having low tolerance for another views. It's a form of arrogance and self-centered selfishness.

It's interesting to hear what you two have said about Solzhenitsyn.. I sort of considered him a hero, but who knows. A lot of his writing resonates, when he talks about God I think he can sense what's important.. It seems like maybe he spread himself too thin. Or, well, maybe he was a fraud. I can't really say.

How important is religion in Russian today? Is there an institution comparable to the Roman Catholic Church? If so what role does it play?

Do people believe? Did communism try to stomp it out?

Did the USSR try to destroy distinct regional cultures? How much of the life of an average Russian did it try to control? What spheres did it dominate or at least influence? Did it leave any alone?

Does the Russian government nowadays try to control much of the lives of its citizens?

>How important is religion in Russian today? Is there an institution comparable to the Roman Catholic Church? If so what role does it play?
Religion plays a huge role in internal politics nowadays. It is not healthy. Our country is secular by constitution. It plays a lesser role in the lives of common folk, but it's still always there be it burials, or the birth of a child.
The Church plays a role of consolidating masses and controlling them through religious authroity.
Orthodox church is organized differently than Catholic. Read up on it. The short answer is no, it's not comparable to Roman Catholic Church. It's influence is way smaller worldwide and even among other Orthodox countries.

>Do people believe? Did communism try to stomp it out?
Yes and no. But there is a large portion of atheists. And even a larger portion of people who are religious only nominally having never touched the bible/quran.

>Did the USSR try to destroy distinct regional cultures?
No. It even tried to cultivate it, but the influance of Russian language and culture was so strong that lesser cultures and languages are at risk of becoming extinct.

>How much of the life of an average Russian did it try to control?
Totally controlled economic and political activities. Much less personal.

>What spheres did it dominate or at least influence?
I don't quite get what you mean by that.

>Did it leave any alone?
Artists, actors, sportsmen, musicians... you get the idea.

>Does the Russian government nowadays try to control much of the lives of its citizens?
Yeah recently it does and it irritates the fuck of everyone. It mostly concernes the access to degeneracy on the web by unprotected mind, ie children. CP, guro, ISIS material, etc. It is okay to do on paper, but there are always excesses.

Don't expect too much. They are bootyful but stupid and can cheat on you with a trash can. Russia is a matriarchy, so men's opinion doesn't really matter for them. You can be lucky and find yourself an Orthodoxal wife, but that means that you should also convert.

>Reserves don't matter, only rates of production and extraction.

Russian production is good because there are pipelines built during communist times for both oil and gas to the biggest and richest country in Europe and many others.

> Yeah, Norway may run out of oil some time in the future. We'll see how they fare fater that.

They saved most of the money for the future ....

Look at how much they lost when the USSR was dissolved, even thought people then did not want the country to be dissolved but rather communism gone. From 290 million to 140 million people. Ukraine which was one of the most invested in areas in Soviet Union turned into a joke. Russia itself completely stripped of everything by the few who went to live a luxurious western life. Yet people wonder why they are doing so shit, the country was literally balkanized and sucked dry for a decade.

The next time Russia gets cosy with the West it will cease to exist. Just look at Ukraine, Western affluence somehow managed to make a country of the same people hate their own.

We still use idiom "like a white man", meaning "in a proper way", and there are people we call "black" here using the word as a pejorative when we refer to natives from Caucasus who act like niggers.

>Is corruption really bad?
A bit better than before, so people say. To put it in perspective: virtually everyone in Saint-Peterburg has to pay a bribe for driving license, it's almost official. If you don't, you fail on exam, and you have to pay a significant sum for every attempt. There is mandatory conscription in Russia, but you can avoid it if you have health problems, in theory. In some districts in Saint-Peterburg if not all of them you could semi-officially bribe people to make them find your health problem. If you don't, you risk being conscripted even if you are a cripple. My brother made suing people a kind of sport and refuses to pay bribes. He had his driving license marked with a needle for fellow ДПC inspectors (traffic police) to recognize a guy you don't want to mess with or ask for a bribe. If there is a sign for others to recognize, I guess we have a kind of mafia here instead of road police.
People say it was worse before, but I was too young to be involved, so I can't compare it to anything. What I see now is horrible if you ask me. A lot of this corruption stems from tradition. Also people don't really know any laws or even care about them, and there are other people who make money from that.

You are literally mentally disabled if you think that drilling in Norway are the same as drilling in permafrost in -45 celsius.
You do realise that you need money to actually drill it out, than some how manage to get it from permafrost region 6k km away from european border to europe to sell it and get profit?
Are you that disabled gypsie that post kurban bairam pics in every thread where Russian is mentioned?
