You can buy a decent Ruger in 380 for like 280 - 325 dollars or a M&P for 380. Dont be afraid to buy rimfire/22lr either. The guns are cheap and so is the ammo. Despite what caliber keks say about their .45/.40 the psychological stopping power of the 22lr is the same with less recoil (so you can land more shots even if you miss your first). For something bigger, the canik/CIA TP9 guns are excellent budget guns so long as you don't mind supporting ISIS. Those run around $300-350 brand new. Look up some reviews.

Handguns are more complex and finicky. Their fit and tuning has to be absolutely perfect for the tilt locking barrel to perfectly time with the slide, ejector, extractor, magazine feed, etc. More moving parts, smaller scale, much more that can go wrong.
You should build a 1911, and then an AR-15 tell me what is easier to get right.

Speer is pretty much the pinnacle of ammunition design, but you should look at Hornandy CD though, very reliable performance in FBI standard testing, across a range of Velocities (IE Subcompact to Duty Size) they'll always expand even if you blast a guy from behind a cubic meter of denim.

Revolvers just don't look complicated, but it comes down to the tuning of the components, there is much less slack to give in their components. Look at their timing components, just to keep the cylinder alligned with the barrel, how the DA and SA sear interact with the hammer, mainspring, cyl cam, etc.

Buffalo Bore makes a really good .38 spl +p using a 158gr lead semi-wadcutter hollow point (LSWCHP) traveling at 1000 fps. It doesn't necessarily work like a modern HPs with their cutting petals, instead the front half of the bullet causes massive trauma in the first foot of the wound cavity and the second half gives you the penetration you need to reach vitals even if your shot isn't ideal (having to shoot through an arm, shoulder or really fat guy)
It's the load the gritty noir detectives used in the good ole days and they swore by them. Certainly street proven over decades

A .410 shot gun round is perfect for wounding pigeons. Honestly bro, go to /k/ and ask, the judge is the stupidest thing you can carry, and the fact that you don't know it reveals that you don't have shooting training... which means you need more than five shots (the capacity of the judge) to hit your target. It also means you have probably have no chance of staying on target with the muzzle climb generated by the short barrel + .45 round. So what you should really be looking at is a Glock 19. It shoots 9mm, and you get 15 + 1 chances to hit the nigger. Less recoil. No maintenance. Easier to hit your target, and plenty of rounds to shut it down.
