For one part I think having a democratic system in the EU would be a good Idea. Secondly I believe that a USEU could exists but the European leaders completely failed in every regard.
For having a European state there are most importantly 3 factors:
1. Time; growing from a trade agreement into a nation wont happen within a decade.
2. Consent; Not only from governments but from the people.
3. Social and cultural homogeneity; that will require a lot of time.
None of that will happen in a decade or two and the EUs attempt at trying anyway have completely failed.
A stable USEU wont happen within the foreseeable future.

The EU should never have come into existence. All the EU autocrats want is more power, more influence, more profit for themselves. They're addiced to it and they don't stop at anything to achieve it.
It's collapse is inevitable, the same as the Soviet Union collapses. The groups they're bringing in to try and break up nation states are ultimatively unruleable. The people themselves will only stay passive as long as they have more to lose than to gain by taking action. Once the money runs out and they can't conjure up more, things will get nasty.
The only question is, HOW and WHEN the EU will fail not whether it will. And the sooner it does and the more in control the Europeans are over it, the less bad it will be.
I just watched Brexit: The Movie on YouTube, and my feelings toward Brexit have changed a bit. The entire movie is basically a love letter to free trade and blatantly ignores the many protectionist policies that allowed Britain to become an economic powerhouse.

The idea of one unified Europe is as bad as the idea of one unified Patria Grande. It won't work.
Sure, if you want to have some kind of international organization that quickens supranational trade and diplomacy, that's fine and dandy, but unifying it as one state simply won't go without sacrifices at the current situation. And that's exactly what Merkel is trying to do, albeit in a very authoritarian manner. The EU will punish European countries that have a desire for full incorporation and independence from the Union (the Czech Republic and the UK being the current main examples).
The issue you have right now is that the EU is not like the federal government of the USA or South Africa, it's a lot like the Brazilian Federation. There is one central power without any responsibility before smaller state-ranged populations or their respective freedoms, traditions, and cultural backgrounds. They only care about the major populations that they can manipulate and that they are (generally) a part of. Plus, there is no Constitution that will stop them from overriding a state's right to self-determination.
So, the idea of one unified Europe was truly beautiful in the words of politicians such as Oswald Mosley, yet the overall culture (mostly outside of the Slavic and Baltic countries) did not develop towards an ideology that would make this option beneficial for European cultures and Europeans as a whole.
