There are always going to be red states and blue states. Some people live there because they always lived there, others have moved there because of jobs or lifestyle. With gun laws in mind, I think we should let certain groups of states form small coalitions regarding gun laws.
i.e.
Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico form their own little coalition. They adapt some or most of their gun laws so that they reflect each other but are still "lax" compared to states like NJ for example. On the same note, all the New England states can form a little gun law coalition that has severely strict rules and regulations.

Another tact though is to remember WHY trump wants the temporary ban: It's to change and enhance how they vet people and organisations. San Bernadino happened in part because their investigations into the wife and their mosque were shot down because of shitty government directives. I don't think that would have happened under Trump. I also think it might have posed difficulties for Omar's parents, as well as making it more likely that the powers that be acted on Omar himself before shit hit the fan.

Think of medical science- doctors need to run many tests and procedures if what is wrong with you isn't immediately apparent. Regarding severe stomach pains it could be appendicitis (a fatal disease) or really bad gas- they don't know and just advise that you should watch for other symptoms and possibly visit the emergency room quickly if it doesn't get better.
Simply imagining all that might be possible makes it clear we've come a long way from thinking that leeches suck the bad blood out but for the most part we're still a long way from anything resembling perfection in the medical sciences.
