Shame. I was a scout in the mid 2000's before the whole gay Obama thing happened and it was an amazingly masculine environment.
The scout leaders basically let the older scouts run everything and had very little influence.
The result was a bit chaotic, with a culture not too dissimilar from a high school locket room, but there was always 1 or 2 mature scouts who kept everyone else in check, and at the end of the day everyone looked out for each other.
Attending each of the weekly meetings would make your average SJW commit suicide. The sad part was I didn'tappreciate how awesome it was until I was out.

Maybe that was above my age grade. However, I did learn how to use a knife safely and effectively during one of those pow-wow things when a kid I barely knew hung out with me and showed me his cool knife and how to use it.
Something must have rubbed off I suppose because know I'm one of the few people I know to EDC a knife. It's super-useful.
Made it to Eagle.
Taught me basic camping/survival skills, taught me to shoot, and our troop was pretty based. Our scoutmaster was friends with the head camp counselor at summer camp so we got to register for small boat sailing every fucking year. Had a legit Vietnam vet teach us knots and regale us with stories about his days in the Army.
That was over 10 years ago, though. From what I hear the BSA is pretty cucked now. 2/10 would not recommend.

I did boy scout for a bit, meeting area was local elementary school where it sounded like fun, and it was for a while.

I had do use this old, busted, blunt saw myself to cut out the designs of my own making. But then we had super cool father-son times painting them together, and he gave me good secrets like lubricating the "axles" and gluing on weights after cutting enough wood off of it.

Unfortunately I finished up right during the real waning years of the program. The BSA changed the rules in... I think 1990 IIRC to allow for women to be ASMs, but it wasn't until the late 90s that you saw a lot of shitty PTA moms start elbowing their way into the program, and that IMO is what really killed scouting.
Suddenly all the rules started changing. Regulations got more lax. Merit badge requirements got embarrassingly lowered. There was less and less tolerance for boys being boys and getting into shenanigans at scout meetings and on camping trips.
The BSA used to be a liberal's dream - my troop had kids of all ages and races, and we even had a few Jewish and Muslim kids as well. None of us gave a shit about any of that stuff, all we cared about was "who's the best shot?" "who does the best pioneering projects?" "who's the fastest swimmer?" "who can build the best fire?". We were all scouts and that was all that mattered.
But by the late 90s that all changed. As the number of moms in the troop grew, they started constantly making us aware of all the other shit dividing us. "Oh, you can't pick James last for games, that's racist!" "Oh you can't make fun of Daniel, it's anti-semitic!" "Don't tell Sam the only way he can get the Personal Fitness badge is to lose some weight, we'll just petition them to lower the requirements" and on and on it went. We were all constantly being made aware of the fact that we were different and we all fucking hated it.

I joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger (halfway through the school year). I stayed with it through Weebelos (sp?) and joined Boy Scouts. I ended up getting my Eagle Scout rank and 3 palms (I even worked at a Boy Scout Summer Camp for 2 summers).

As a former Mormon who moved all across the country, that's only partially true. In urban areas and places with lots of Mormons you are 100% correct. But from my experience, rural/smaller Mormon communities are very different. We would go out and build barns and do similar projects for other Mormons like we were Amish. This was just stuff everyone would come out to do in our spare time and had nothing to do with scouts.
City mormons would often complain about scouts and only did it because that's what mormons did. They didn't care for it.
