I'm fairly conservative and I usually hate the government intervening so strongly, but obesity is a straight up national embarrassment at this point. It needs to be addressed like a national emergency.

Everything Kellogg's markets is synonymous with breakfast here. They sell what amounts to dessert in various forms, and tag it "part of a complete breakfast". Somehow, that becomes "breakfast" and careless parents in a hurry happily shovel pop-tarts into their kids every morning. The kids are content because it's fucking cake for breakfast. The parents are content because the kids eat without complaint, and they satisfy themselves that anything Kellogg's makes is an adequate breakfast.

This is really all there is to it. It's not going to stop unless we force manufacturers to stop producing the junk foods that are making people fat. It's easy to say, "It's fat people's fault for having no self control" and to an extent that's true but you have to realize that junk food has been shown to be highly addictive.
This shouldn't come as much of a surprise given how powerful our hardwired desires for fat, salt and sugar are but there have been studies showing it's more difficult for some people to stop eating processed food than it is for them to quit hard drugs. The companies who produce the burgers and the chips and the soda spend millions and millions of dollars paying actual scientists to fine tune junk food to produce the most powerful dopamine response possible in the people who eat it and when there's so much money and so much effort going into making food literally addictive, it's no surprise that a certain percentage of the population is unable to resist.
