2. Our training since our last rotation out of the sandbox has been all about pacifying crowds lethally and non-lethally. Before we shipped out to Afghanistan on my first rotation they drill into your head, for YEARS, on how to avoid IEDs and how to spot them.
AQ and Taliban really only wire roads and paths with 120mm shells and bomblets they find from airstrikes, barrel bombs, etc... basic 3rd worlder IED shit. Then, after it explodes, they try to finish off the survivors with AKs and film it. But since last rotation, our training doctrine has switched over from spotting IEDs and fighting across long deserts and mountains to brutal house-to-house urban combat, against overwhelming numbers armed to the teeth. This is not the MO of AQ or the Taliban. I'm not saying that DOESN'T happen in the sandbox, but it is very rare.
This leads me to believe that we are either planning for a war against the East (China, Russia), but that seems unlikely because most wargames depicting situations against the east involve the Navy and AF, and they would bomb the cities into oblivion, not fight them house-to-house.
And non-lethally pacifying crowds? No ones had to do that shit since the initial invasion of Iraq.
