As a mater of fact, shortly after the loss of the invincible armada the British sent a fleet south to invade Spain and was completely wrecked.

Every colonial power was interested in the same things. Wealth, land and power.
Spain had two priorities; acquiring vast sums of gold and new converts.
England wanted land, wealth and power. They were tired of being the underdogs for their entire history prior to the colonial age.
They both committed atrocities towards natives. I'd say Brits were better at it as they didn't fuck as many of the natives and instead just killed them all. The Spanish believed that those converted to god would eventually evolve from sub-human savages with the grace of god. In reality they just ended up creating a race of self-loathing half-breeds.
