I have a Bushmaster XM-15 with the round handguards and the handle on the receiver. I can't detach that so I was wondering, is it cheaper to get a new AR-15 capable of having the furniture added to it? Or is it cheaper to find a different upper and somehow update the hang guards?

Exactly, another are the drawstrings on many jackets. They sometimes wedge themselves in there if you are attempting to holster your weapon.
