The Portuguese and Spanish colonies however, were created exclusively with the intent of extracting riches for their masters at europe. The people that came to these colonies did so with the intend of making fortune and going back to europe rich, they did not care about this land or the people that lived in it, they were all in it for the gold.
Basically, it took 2-3 centuries before these colonies had any other purpose than sending resources to europe, Brazil for instance only started developing properly after the emperor himself was forced to move to Brazil to escape Napoleon, because Portugal sided with its historical ally, England.
Basically, you can't really compare these 2 colony types withoun't taking in consideration the goal of the colony. Only when the royal family had migrated here did they care about developing this land, before that it was just a place to extract gold, precious lumber, dyes, spices and to have huge plantations growing sugarcane, coffee and cotton using slave labor.

My understanding is south America had complicated power structures that settlers could hijack. Those institutions were inherited and influenced the political landscape to this day.
North America and Australia didn't have the same power structures so they couldn't as easily dominate the natives by replacing the political elite. Instead they eventually empowered the settlers since they ended up being the labor instead of the natives.
