Even in the small sphere of Muslims in my family, some of them drink, some of them don't wear the veil, some of them don't go to mosque, some of them don't pray, some of them eat pork, some of them don't believe in god. Other people in the family (especially some of the oldest ones) are the complete opposite of that. Either way, they're all Muslims. It seems that, like every other religion, it gets more and more secular as time goes on. At least in my family.
It's difficult, because I've seen really nasty sides of Muslim culture, but I can't even generalise that to my whole family, let alone all of Islam. I don't know if I can sum up Islam as a whole. It's 1.6 billion people.

Actually I think religion serves a great purpose: ideally, it makes people believe in something bigger than themselves, that isn't just money or power or fame. It fills a void in people. Fear of death is in everyone. Religion will always exist because people will always have a hard time accepting that everything is pointless. It doesn't need to explain the external world, it just needs to soothe the human condition. And, like good art, literature or philosophy, that's what good religion should do, at the end of the day.
