As I've been saying, it actually does make a lot of sense, and it is something that is known to happen very often with people who are so trapped in the closet that they won't even admit they're gay to themselves.
Here's how I see it...
He was boxed into a mental corner by his conflicting desires.
Intellectually, he wanted to be a good muslim; and islam says that homosexuality is evil and gays should be killed.
But he had those uncontrollable gay urges. As hard as he tried, he could not rid himself of them.
