My belief is that most of the actual deaths occured in a clustered area around one of the fire exits, and that most of the deaths occurred in the early moments of the conflict before the hostage standoff developed.

For home defense, I keep a 20 gauge Remington 870 handy. It cannot fail to fire, probably the most reliable shotgun ever made. I can carry 50x 20 gauge shells (that's in-gun plus a couple slings filled up) instead of ~30 12 gauge shells for the same weight/volume, plus the gun is lighter & has less recoil.
For inside my house/on my property, great main defense weapon, with a 10mm mag. for back-up or otherwise tight location.
Would I try to take a 12 or 20 gauge into a club to inflict mass casualties? Fuck no. I'd run out of ammo after ~50 shots.
Go clubbing with .223 and several 30-round magazines? Probably carry nearly 500 rounds (if not more) for the same encumbrance.
Remember all those reports of him being strapped up with a "bomb-like device?" Since no bomb has been confirmed yet (that I've seen), I suggest he probably had something like 20 magazines attached to his body in various ways that people mistook for explosives.
Lesseee ... 20x 30 = 600 plus 30+1 in the gun (at approximate minimum versus 50 or maybe 100 max shotgun shells, and a massive bitch reloading your shotgun. Even if you had a bunch of 10-shell magazines.
I've shot a lot of pro skeet and trap in my day. I can tell you that 100 12 gauge shells wears you down, even firing them over the course of a casual hour on a skeet range. I've done 500 in a day in competition, and it's pretty exhausting.

Even shooting someone through the leg, you rarely get the entire bullet leaving. At 6 inches of penetration, 50% of the bullet mass in fragments is typical to exit with the rest in smaller fragments remaining.
Google up some ballistics gel tests on a .223. Typical cavity is 10"-12", maybe 14" max., and about 4'-6" diameter at 6" penetration.
A .223 is the definition of not over-penetrating ... it penetrates just about perfectly for maximum damage per its energy profile.

I've seen a deer shot in the shoulder blade after piercing the deer's heart with a .270 and the bullet mushroomed and stopped halfway through. I don't think it was FMJ ammo though, I think it was a round meant for hunting.
