I would defend your right to own whatever weapon you choose, but as with all rights, reasonable restrictions must be placed to protect people. There is definitely nothing wrong with shooting any type of gun at a gun range, but just like I don't want my crazy drug-addicted neighbor to own a nuke, I wouldn't want them to be able to purchase an AR either. The potential for damage is just too great compared to the relative benefit. I don't think an automatic weapon is necessary for home defense, as robbers don't work in large groups. Just to teach you some of the nomenclature, the AR15 is a semi-automatic rifle that can be owned by civilians. The M4 or M16 is the automatic version of the AR15 which generally cannot be owned by civilians.
Let me also explain how getting a fully automatic rifle would go. First off, they cost a FUCK TON of money. You won't find many fully autos under $10k. So lets say you're a rich bastard and want it anyways. You have to fill out a form that must be approved by the ATF that takes SIX MONTHS for them to say yes or NO. Now that you have the ATF's approval, you must submit a few photos and some fingerprints. Then you have to go to an interview with and ATF agent and explain why you want the weapon and go over your information. Then you have to go to your local police station and get approved by the police chief. Then you can have your automatic weapon.
Does that sound like something a criminal is going to go through or do you think they will just buy it illegally?
