Does it really matter? Yugoslav Civil War(s) were about territory. Nobody disputed the right of anyone to leave, just how much land they would take with them.
Serbs were far and away the most populous nation in Yugoslavia. Whether by design or not, they were split up with huge minorities in two separate republics (Bosnia and Croatia), one autonomous region (Vojvodina) and Kosovo (a smaller minority there).
So Serbs say "We gave up all this power for you" and Croats and Slovenes have their own answer and want to leave. They left, but the dispute was over whether they would be allowed to leave with huge Serb minorities.

Had Russia been what it is today, it would probably be a different story in terms of how the maps were drawn, but not that Croatia and Slovenia (at the least) were independent.
