People never needed (classical) socialism. They just needed worker protection (because they do tend to lack economic freedom), decent public services, policies that reduce unemployment and keep housing prices under control, etc, and common sense regulations in general.
Mostly things we have now, but the government is very corrupt and incompetent. These things just need to be restored (or scrapped and redone). "Seize the means of production" socialism makes zero sense in these days and age. Most jobs are in the service sector for fucks sake.
