That's a shit idea. Many people will not willingly divide their nation for such a stupid reason. It will weaken the states. Also what if... in the north of a country there are oil reserves but in the south there's nothing really. The south would never agree to a split and you'd get war. Plenty of reasons but even assuming no downsides, eventually the population inside each part will become divided and further divisions will be necessary.
Also, left vs right is a very narrow worldview and the political spectrum has a lot more dimensions. Dividing the country in 2 is nowhere enough to cover all interests.
