This. The Founders knew that a nation-state cannot exist without national heroes and folk tales concerning those heroes. We have the various founding fathers, Paul Bunyan, Daniel Boone, Johnny Appleseed, and John Henry. Their mythic stories are meant to demonstrate American virtue in action; to give examples with which to live our lives. They display a pride in labor, ferocity in valor, firmness in honor, and unwavering faith in the Almighty Creator.
The creation of this great American pantheon of heroes was necessary to the creation of America as a nation-state.
It is a crying shame that the myths of these great men are not passed down to children these days. The people who attack the very idea of a nation-state hate these stories.
