There is no third party in the United States because both parties have a very deeply invested interest in keeping it this way.
The best way to support third party candidates is to oppose both parties actively and voting for the two-party candidate that represents you best if the election will be close
I'm only supporting Trump because Hillary will definitely be worse than Obama, and he did nothing significant.

If you're in a very heavily one sided state, then it's fine to vote your heart. Your residency in that state will already count against your own interests anyway, so voting against it doesn't really matter.
