There’s no strategist pulling the strings, and no collection of burn-it-all-down aides egging him on. At the heart of the rage against Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, the campaign aides closest to him say, is Bernie Sanders.
It was the Vermont senator who personally rewrote his campaign manager’s shorter statement after the chaos at the Nevada state party convention and blamed the political establishment for inciting the violence.
He was the one who made the choice to go after Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz after his wife read him a transcript of her blasting him on television.
He chose the knife fight over calling Clinton unqualified, which aides blame for pulling the bottom out of any hopes they had of winning in New York and their last real chance of turning a losing primary run around.
And when Jimmy Kimmel’s producers asked Sanders’ campaign for a question to ask Donald Trump, Sanders himself wrote the one challenging the Republican nominee to a debate.
There are many divisions within the Sanders campaign—between the dead-enders and the work-it-out crowds, between the younger aides who think he got off message while the consultants got rich and obsessed with Beltway-style superdelegate math, and between the more experienced staffers who think the kids got way too high on their sense of the difference between a movement and an actual campaign.
But more than any of them, Sanders is himself filled with resentment, on edge, feeling like he gets no respect -- all while holding on in his head to the enticing but remote chance that Clinton may be indicted before the convention.

Once he DOES drop out, all his unspent funds will be transferred over to the DNC to use in the General against Trump, as will his mailing lists to be used by Hillary. Were you getting Sanders emails? Doesn't make sense. In fact, what he's doing is extremely dangerous if he's not pushing for VP or influence on the platform at this point. He has fired up voters alright, he's created contingents of "Bernie or Bust" supporters that won't vote if it's Hillary or Trump, or they'll vote Jill Stein. Both he and Hillary risk a Trump presidency if there's no chance of him being on the ticket, you will have a split democratic vote.
Mind you the Republican vote is already split, which means if you have a unified Clinton/Sanders ticket there is almost no chance of Trump winning, but if the Democratic vote splits, nobody will get a majority and Trump may wind up with a plurality, and end up with enough electoral college votes to win.
What's Bernie hoping to accomplish on the platform? He wants these issues addressed that normally are not a part of Clinton's campaigning:
-Wall Street Reform
-Education Debt (he won't get free tuition, but they may adjust some things to help with the staggering amount of student debt we currently have)
-Climate Change Research and Management Strategy
-Criminal Justice Reform, namely repealing of mandatory minimum sentencing for low level drug offenders.
Healthcare Reform is something he'd like but I don't think Hillary will budge on that. She may budge on those other issues, Wall street reform did become a part of her campaign platform after Bernie grilled her on it in debates.
That and the more fired up his supporters are, the more likely he is to be the runningmate, to keep the vote unified.
