Brazil: their economy was the same size as the US one for most of the 1800s (up until 1890). Their independence was in 1822 so we left them in good shape and their fuckup is their own fault.
African colonies: well, when they kicked Portugal out at the tip of their bayonets they all had stability and prosperity (see Rhodesia for similarity). Again, not our fault.
