Few details that I didn't see mentioned in the thread:
- Japan was ready to surrender well before the first nuke, only condition was that they want to keep the emperor, this was declined.
- Incendiary bombs that were dropped on other cities were very efficient on wooden houses with paper walls, the 2 nukes that were dropped were just another cities that were fucked but that was nothing new, nobody cared too much because of this and also that news did not travel very fast and no one knew what the A-bomb is anyway its power was hard to imagine.
- The A-bombs were dropped also for US to test it how it will work on people, and for the rest of the world to see what will happen if they oppose the US.
- The unconditional surrender that was demanded was agreed upon only after there was a risk of Soviets invading Hokkaido which was not acceptable.
- After surrender the US let the Japan keep the Emperor anyway.
