Platinum is for the crown (prongs that hold the stone) It's a common practice. It's a more durable metal and less prone to bend, gold is a very soft metal. Using pure gold for a ring isn't too smart considering you can bend pure gold rings with your hands with little effort. You're going to want a hybrid alloy like 18kt should do you just fine. I cut and polish gems though, very seldom do I cast mountings.
Gold is also a super dense and heavy metal. 15 grams is pretty standard weight for a well made engagement mounting.
