Well, if it helps you.. I've already put my story here once. I serve. I'm a recent Russian immigrant though. I came to America for masters degree in history - according to the program's rules, I must have leaved after I get the degree. But I found a way to stay in and acquire citizenship: I married a nice white girl from my uni. She still thinks that I love her, but in fact I don't, the only reason I married her was I didn't want to return to my shithole "country". She doesn't realize, or maybe she just doesn't give a fuck, which is most likely.
And here comes the military part. We want to buy a house and shit, but I was ashamed of myself making incredibly less than my wife (she has a much more useful degree). And so I joined the Army, my degree gave me the opportunity to enlist as a Specialist and have quite a decent income. Also, my good physical shape helps a lot, I was always fit.
So far I like the army, it's far better than university studies, at least at every point of time you know exactly what you're supposed to do and there's no question, I like that. And soon enough I realized that my good performance gives real opportunities to grow up in ranks. My life has never been so good.
And btw, I have a dream of being deployed in Russia after it finally collapses and balkanizes, so that I can have my revenge and liberate and democratize it once and for all, for God's sake.

I was around a month from signing on and ended up shattering part of my back in a cliff-jumping accident. Not crippled, thank God, but disqualified from all military service. Wanted to join up for practical experience (how to kill/not die, how to follow orders) making myself more marketable for gov work, and out of a sense of duty.
I'm just a sophomore in college, but that's probably the biggest regret of my life so far.

My answer is that I tried to enlist. Fuck, it was my lifes dream the serve in the army but I was rejected on the account of genetics (which mind you the problem that I suffer from would never of had any problem during service and will never cause problems in day to day life. I even had two doctors confirm it and one was a PhD in the field of medicine that deals with my problem).
Meanwhile, drug addicts are being accepted left-right and centre. Needless to say I fucking hate Australia and our bullshit government
