I was in France last year and visited Omaha beach (and Gold, Juno, Point du Hoc, the cemetery...) Thought I'd dump pics.

Point du Hoc. Where Army Rangers climbed up the bluffs to take the fortifications and artillery overlooking many miles of the beach. Unfortunately the Germans actually already removed the major weapons and shipped them elsewhere.

Just inside that big preserved bunker. Wall was covered with small holes. Possibly grenades, or submachine gun fire?

Earlier in the day at the WW2 museum in Caen, but relevant to Pointe du Hoc, which is shown on this map between the two green arrows on the right side. The beaches Omaha, Gold, Juno, etc are to the left of it. Gives an idea of the strategic importance of it due to clear lines of sight across the areas where ships were advancing.
>>
>>76288192

OK, last one of PDH. This is the view North of it, with Omaha beach being the first beach next to it in this direction, just around the point in the pic. This would have been the key area where literally thousands of ships- mostly thousands of yards off shore- would approach.

We arrived at Omaha beach at Dog Green Sector, which was one of the edge sections furthest South. It also was one of the earlier landing areas and with some of the heaviest casualties. Yes, it was also the landing area depicted in Saving Private Ryan, though that was filmed I believe in Ireland.

View south, off of Omaha beach actually. Beyond that point is PDH.
>>
>>76288192

Our French tour guide with a map of Omaha. He was just non-stop information and stories, but at this point most of the group wandered off around the beach on our own.

View south on Omaha, Dog Green Sector.

A couple things that were striking about the beach was how damn wide it was between water and rocks. The very gradual and shallow beach and the strong tides create a huge area of sand nothing like American beaches.
>>
>>76288777
I've been there too! That monument looks like a giant cock if you ask me...
>>
>>76288192

Still viewing south, at the water now. Must have been a few hundred yards from the parking lot. A lot of the landing vehicles arriving in this area would have to stop even further out, getting stuck on sandbars. It would be a very long walk in through waist high water.
>>
>>76288192

Same area, towards land. There were separations of the bluffs called Draws where troops attempted to get off the beach. Germans had dozens of very carefully placed machine gun nests along these draws.
>>
>>76288192

Gun installment of some kind, too big to be a machine gun.

>>76288192

Another noticeable thing about this beach was the deep grooves in the sand after the tide goes out. Apparently from the strong currents up and down the beach, which added to the difficulty of landing there.

Last one of Omaha, this sector at least.

As we were gathering to go the tour guide said to collect some sand to take home, which never even crossed my mind before. I began a frantic search for something to hold sand in. Eventually found a baggie and took some home. I put it in a little labeled jar and gave it to my dad for father's day.
