What's going to happen to all these states' economies when trucks become self-driving? Is Trump going to prevent robots from taking over driving jobs?
>>
>>76181849
All it takes is one person to die in a self driving car crash and boom the legislation for the technology is set back up to a decade. Not to mention unions.
>>
Pic is showing the most common jobs for each state btw.
>>
Trains have been self-driving since the Eisenhower administration and yet they still have drivers, so I don't think the impact's going to be quite so dramatic as all that.
>>
It's going to be awhile. For now we are going to get better cruise control.
>>
>>76181956
has already happened several times, they get away with it though because google money.
>>
>>76182019

This. Even transit networks with full ATC still require an operator who literally just watches the train go

In any case, no other technological advancement throughout history has caused mass unemployement on a long-term scale, there's no reason to think this will be the first
>>
>>76181849
were nations plagued by mass unemployment when planes, trains, motorcars and automated factory machinery became more common?
>>
>>76182250
Yea it's usually how it works: if you keep it under wraps and don't let the MSM run the story the dumbass majority will never know and only worry about the newest Kardashian episode.

>>76182351

No, because the industries that created those things created jobs. This is literally the opposite scenario.
>>
>>76182351
>were nations plagued by mass unemployment when automated factory machinery became more common?
Yes. It's exactly what's happening now. You can produce the same amount of goods with a single digit percentage of the workforce you needed in the past.
>>
>>76181849
There will still be Truck Drivers to operate the "self-driving" trucks. No company will send $500,000 trailer loads across the country without someone to protect it.
>>
>>76182653
>start on companies
>end on citizens

Legislation is a rope made of sand.
>>
>>76182653
They're going to have drones watching from above.
>>
>>76182784
And then what? Drones aren't going to stop people from stealing the shit from a self-driving truck that they forced off the road.
>>
>>76181849
We're at least 100 years away from even allowing those things on public roads, let alone them getting any major support.

Driving is a big deal here.

Besides, I, Robot and shit.

Has the personal computer and internet created new industries?

Has the PC with email and Microsoft word saved time? has this increased a secretaries productivity?
>>
>>76182921
A drone will follow the criminals and direct LO to catch them.
>>
>>76182965
It created fewer jobs than it replaced. Why is it so hard to understand?
>>
>>76183050
Drones are severely limited on flight time. And in any event, you need someone operating the drone.

>>

They're going to have them monitor sections of highway in shifts: one drone gets low on fuel it goes back to the base to refuel/recharge while another one takes its place.

>Even transit networks with full ATC still require an operator who literally just watches the train go

The trains in Vancouver are automated with no driver. Have been since 1986. There are other automated transit systems around the world. Just because we don't do it here doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
>>
>>76181849
we are at least 50 years away

there is no robot to load and unload trailers or to dock them or to drop them and pick them up
>>
>>76183610
You don't need drones. The truck itself will be full of cameras. Also the retard to are replying to thinks drivers serve as guards, they don't. Every trucking line instructs their drivers to not fight hijackers or thieves. All they can do is yell or call the police. An automated vehicle can do both of those.
>>
>>76183163
show me proof

Who maintains the truck?

Deliveries arrive at their location faster since automated trucks can drive non stop, businesses are able to restock faster this means sales aren't lost because items are always in stock, the business person has to hire more people to deal with the constant incoming stock and sales.

Or lets say the Supermarket with the automated tills means they can cut till workers, with the saving in wages they increase in sales because the products cost less to produce, the supermarket now needs to hire more shelf stackers.

>>76183482
productivity increases
>>
>>76183867
>unload trailers
That's what warehouse staff is for. Drivers deserve to be unemployed for thinking they're such special snowflakes.
>>
>>76183482

Right, in fact, I just passed a horde of drunken, unemployed sailors on the street corner just now. They were wearing blue jean collars and bellbottoms and singing jolly songs about the sea while downing their daily rations of rum. Poor guys just can't catch a break, can they?

>>76183623

We do it here, there are several automated systems around the US. Still, some authorities require the trains to have an employee on board at all times, while others have increased staff at a control center. My point was that people are still employed to monitor automatic systems, they don't just go away.

On a related matter, what will happen to car insurance if cars are self-driving? I don't have to have car insurance if i take a bus, nor do i need insurance if i drive my vehicle solely on my property.

If we're not driving, how will car insurance try to fuck us over?

People saying driverless cars are a long way away are ignoring the real issue, which is that at some point in the future we're going to have to deal with a world in which there simply isn't enough work to go round. Is this a good thing? Or a bad thing? Could basic income solve the societal problems?
>>
>>76181956
>All it takes is one person to die in a horseless buggy crash and boom the legislation for the technology is set back up to a decade

All we need is for self driving cars to be as safe or safer than a human driving for it to be relevant. According to the numbers we have right now, it is significantly safer.

im not sure about other countries, but in america, shipping is essentially a seller's market. there are many more driving jobs than drivers. not sure if that will help or set back automated shipping
>>
>>76184363
I hope it does desu.

It would dramatically change politics in the US over night.
>>
>>76184239
It won't, actually. Premiums for insurance get higher as people have more accidents or are more prone to accidents (which is why insurance for teens is more expensive, usually).

Self driving cars will make car insurance much cheaper once the statistics are put together by the insurance companies and they see just how much less they crash.
>>
>>76181956
A self driving truck crash is not something easily swept under the rug. A family of 7 killed by a robot tractor trailer because the software thought it saw a sudden obstruction for example, will kill the concept.
>>
>>76184500
Im not so sure that's true. Thats logically sound but if a self driving car gets in an accident with me as the passenger that i couldve avoided as the driver suddenly (however statistically untrue) i feel like theyre far less safe than me.
>>
I hope at this point euthanasia becomes legal and encouraged whilst retirement becomes discouraged.
>>
>>76184081
The gin made niggers a fuckton more profitable so we got even more of them. Being able to do more work with the same labor force expands the profit margin and increases quantity demanded of the product produced becuase it's cheaper.
The cotton gin is the best example against the "automation means a fuckton of unemployment" meme

Tbqh Google is a fucking monopoly. Largest search engine, one of the most used browsers, Google Glass, Google Cars, Google Fiber, Google Earth, Google etc.

I think it's time we broke it up into separate, smaller, companies Roosevelt style.

Same for Microsoft, Disney, and many, many other corporations and banks.
>>
>>76184449
There are a lot of audio books you can buy. GraphicAudio is wonderful if you're going on a trip. Lot lizards exist but not at any of the major truck stops anymore such as loves, ta, petro. You'll find them at the beat down off brand places.

>>76183610
Do you realize how expensive that would be for a company?

>>76183871
>every trucking line instructs their drivers not to fight highjackers

Source?

Also, even if an automated truck could have cameras and "call" the police, the criminal would most likely be long gone from whatever remote highway the truck was on. Or they could probably find ways to hack the truck too.
>>
>>76183871
If some giant motherfucker comes out of the cab shouting and waving a tire iron, I'm sure hijackers would fuck off unless they had superior firepower or numbers
>>
>>76182937
What do you mean. Self driving cars have been on us roads for awhile now.
>>
Self driving trucks will be the standard within 10 years. They already work flawlessly, at this point it's more about production of the new vehicles and getting states to approve of them.
>>
>>76184946
Or you can just use one of the alternatives like duckduckgo or bing.
>>
>>76184690
Also they will make you pay up the ass if you want to drive.
>>
>>76181849
They aren't, the possibility of accidents is far too high for any company to ever go for it
Also the insurance would be astronomical
>>
>>76184946
Its not a monopoly if there is alternatives
Just use them and stop bitching.
>>
>>76185365
Worst state is really all states on the north east coast. Roads are too small and thousands of low clearances. They basically just paved over horse carriage roads. Best place is out west. New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona. Beautiful mountains, cacti, etc. The roads are wide. Big warehouses, easy backs.

Worst on scenery I'd say Kansas and Arkansas.

Ask the lizards lol. They know we got money and we're lonely. Makes sense.

I'm waiting for a load home bound in Texas.

I've been driving 5 years in state and 3 over the road.

Storm light archive is great I definitely recommend it.

At risk of being called out by /mu/ I listen to whatever is playing that my antenna catches. I used to have Sirius but it's shit. I love Kansas to Eminem to Dimmu Borgir to reliant k

>>76185739
Only in shitty liberal cities where Google bribes the politicians.

Try widespread implementation and you'll get slapped the fuck down. The majority of people don't want robots on public roads. Again, the I, Robot scenario is actually a real concern. I know it is for me. I don't want some shitty Google robot making the decision to ram my car and kill my entire family because it phoned home and thought saving $1,000,000 worth of phones and tablets was worth the lives of some shitty nobodies.
>>
>>76185760
>They already work flawlessly
Yes, in controlled fucking areas like construction sites
They cannot compensate for human error encountered when driving long distances
>>
Companies which make robots driving trucks will create jobs
Companies which make robots manufacturing other robots will create jobs
Etc
As long as true AI isnt created human factor will always be necessary for anything "automated" to work, even if humans role would only be about controlling work or changing oil in machine's hydraulics

That self driving car slamming into you is your human error, robots don't make mistakes and it only drove into you because of your unpredictable human pattern. We need to remove the people from the roads and let the robots do all the work.
>>
We'll start building more rails before automated trucks. There's not much to gain.
Rail transport to the outskirts, short run trucks to the peeps
>>
>>76181849
I doubt this will ever happen, but even if it does happen it won't happen for a LONG while, auto-driving cars would require enormous infrastructure and planning and if they work like trains do today, would still require a human be present in case of an emergency.

Kansas and Arkansas are just... Boring. Big fields of nothing for Kansas and Arkansas is just trees. It's cool to see the Remington plant outside of little rock on I40 though.

Worst part is dispatch and never getting home on time. That and any lifted pickup truck who feels the need to park in the semi truck spots.

CB radios aren't too big anymore. They'll save your life if it's winter though and you're coming up on a bend where a pile up is. There's a shit ton of great racism though on the air. I'm half surprised more /pol/s don't drive. A lot of people cussing at Swift drivers too.

Oddest thing I've seen is a little kid on the highway. I stopped and called the cops. Nothing really panned out she was just lost.

Freakiest is the birds smashing into my fucking window while I'm driving. It doesn't happen often but when you're daydreaming and a pigeon is suicidal you'll have a heart attack lol.

That sounds incredibly expensive and is bad for the environment for the liberals on here. Waste of fuel desu just hire the driver and have him armed in case of attacks. Or he could just call cops too.

Electronic systems can be disabled by emp's and stuff. The truck will still have to be mechanical and have a human driver.
>>
>>76187981
Home is texas.

I'm buying a house outright cash when I'm around my 30s.

I do see hitchhikers but won't pick them up. If it's night and there's a car broken down with the flashers on I might stop. I've taken a couple people to the gas station so they can get gas. I've pulled a number of cars off the median when they spin out from snow.

Arkansas is beautiful. That guy is nuts.
>>
>>76183867
Unloading trucks can't be fully automated unless a fully fuctional humanoid robot is made that can do most everything a person can. Even then how good could they be in handling fragile packages with glass items? Making judgment on how to pick up and where/how to stack it? Or even packaging or depackaging items?
>>
>>76188411
