It's society in general and part of rebelling against authority. In this particular case, people have become unable to distinguish between pleasure and happiness (the former being eating a tasty meal, the latter being having a sense of personal satisfaction, for example) and always try to chase happiness by going after pleasures. Naturally, it follows that by removing all barriers to pleasure, be they socially imposed or otherwise, that it will result in them being happy. Their happiness is just within reach, if only that nasty society didn't make whatever they want illegal or distasteful.
Of course, this is not the truth and in fact being filled with hollow pleasures masquerading as happiness leads one into a deep sense of depression. There's a reason why post-op trans-sexuals are far more likely to kill themselves, for example, the reason I believe is that they've realized that their unhappiness doesn't come from society looking down on them or stigmatizing them for whatever reason. Similarly, unmarried women are more depressed even if they have the purchasing power to buy nice things. It's another form of addict behavior. You can find examples of this stuff everywhere.
There's no way to stop it at this point other than educating your children and raising them properly. You can't try to change those people because they will see your interference as a new cause for their unhappiness rather than realizing the true source of their depression.
Just be good and make sure your children are good.
