>>76156732
Here's the thing about common core, a lot of the stuff like this example are really damn useful tricks to know. Most of us who work with numbers decently often figure these little tricks out on our own, but would never use them on numbers like this because they're simple as fuck problems. These are laughable just because they're doing them on simpler problems than they're useful for.
Part of the problem though is many of these tricks are idiosyncratic. Some are useful to some people, others not so much, and the intuitive nature of them makes them hard to teach.

Handwriting expert here (its a side thing). I can tell that the numbers and letters were written by the same person. Look at the G and the 5's. The hook on the G has the same curve as the top of the 5's. Further looking at the o the R and the 5's we see the same basic structure. The slant on the third 5 in 5+5+5 is the same as the R and the third and second five of the same series have the same "twist" on the bottom as the o. Further more the structure of the 3 and the W is exremely similar. If we turn the W 90 degrees counter clockwise it is exceedingly similar, the difference comes in that when writing a W he is basically writing a 3 from the bottom up as compared to the top down.

It's a concept that needs to be implemented early and often to be used effectively.
I've used this method my whole life just because that's how I've always preferred it (yes, even for multiplication). As I grew up I learned how to do more and more math without thinking. The math I still need to think about I use this method and I'm much faster than most folks at my level.
Also it is easier for multiplication in general.

She either is giving 4 bags or 6 bags. (maybe 2 of her friends aren't sure if they can make the party)
If her 2 other friends can't make the party, she will give 4 bags. And then any multiple of 4 stickers (4 stickers => 1 sticker in each bag, 40 stickers => 10 stickers in each bag) would work.
If the other 2 friends DO come, then she will need to buy stickers in multiples of 6 to avoid leftovers.
Since she doesn't know for sure if she will need multiples of 4 or 6, she can actually buy in numbers that are multiples of BOTH 4 AND 6, which happens to be numbers 0, 12, 24, 36, etc, ie multiples of 12.

Smart kids get bored in school. They discover the solutions to problems very quickly and then become bored. Bored kids become "problem kids". They get detention. They get expelled.
Now imagine you've got little Timmy who knows off the top of his head what 5x3 is, and he knows why, he knows it's because it's 5+5+5 or 3+3+3+3+3. He knows it's 5 3's or 3 5's. To Timmy this is sufficient information.
Timmy has solved the problem the moment it is presented to him. Unfortunately, now the teacher has to delve into a philosophy lesson as to why 5x3 is the way it is. Timmy is bored, and well on his way to being a problematic troublemaker that gets detention because the teacher spent 20 minutes explaining a 20 second problem.

It's just a visual aide like any other drawn diagram except years down the line a kid will be able to say "hey I've seen that before"

Don't get an undergrad ed degree. Get a real degree, then masters/phd in ed stuff, then you might have a shot at doing some good work...even then it's a massive uphill politicized matter.
>>76158091
>Why is this weird/wrong?
that you could do this in your head and still keep up with the normal lesson would mean you're pretty normal. some kids might need this because they just can't grasp what is happening conceptually. Like when I was in 1st grade there was a kid who had to use an abacus to do simple adding and subtracting. He just had difficulty grasping the concept in his mind of 'five..take away three and there are two left'. the abacus helped him. this is kind of like and abacus for everyone, and that's the problem. Not everyone needs an abacus, it's slows the normal kids down by adding more steps to what should be a simple problem.

It's so simple that adults look at it, scoff and shit out the answer because of course they know it. Many kids can probably do the same.
But that's exactly why they're using this easy shit as an opportunity to teach a better PROCESS so that when they get to stuff where they can't just shit out the right answer they will have a better way to find it.
People like you are used to how they were taught in school that there's one way to add, one way to multiply and one way to do everything else.
but there's not.
There are some thought processes that are quicker or more efficient or more accurate etc. When people are better at math than others is it always 100% because of how they think not some innate connection with the gods of math or some shit.
Instilling this thought process in everyone will drastically improve our math literacy as a whole.

the problem people have is that there is basically no way for bernard and albert to converse/deduce a solution without saying what they were given for information
the reader gets strange insider information on a collaborative event that literally cannot happen and still leave doubt to the answer, yet somehow albert and bernard "know" things about each other regardless
the problem also makes a grave mistake by saying bernard was given the date of her birthday, so there is literally no conceivable way albert would know bernard had the *wrong* date and therefore did not know the day of her birthday

i'll be honest -- i dont know how much time kids get in the us. where I live, elementary is typically done in long periods but you don't spend very long on any single activity. like if you have French for an hour and a half, it won't all be on reading and analyzing the same story, you'll do some quick grammar, then read a bit, then maybe watch a short video, then give some oral presentations, then maybe do something totally unrelated to french, but just in french the whole time. keeping things relevant and organic is the key to keeping students interested, not just throwing them in the woods for 15 minutes every hour

>They (you) are using language, not mathematical procedure, as a means to confuse, alienate, and control minds that need to be enthused about the subject
Keep showing your ignorance.
Math is arbitrary. Everything flows from your base assumptions. Change base assumptions, and you change everything afterwards.
In the same vein, notation is customary and not fully formalized. Symbols and conventions are *ALWAYS* explained in a work as to precisely how they're being used in that work because even mathematical notation is not fully explicit on its own.
You have, at best, a mechanical understanding of mathematical operations, nothing remotely resembling an actual understanding and are therefore entirely unqualified to speak on this topic.

>>76161301
There is no such this as division or subtraction in the field of rationals, they are abbreviations for operations with inverses.
Lets work with a different ring, so you can maybe understand. Suppose we had the ring of square matrices, and you wanted to exponentiate them. Let A be a square matrix and n an integer, then A^n, would be the matrix A multiplied by itself n times, not n multiplied by matrix A, that makes no sense, order matters. The same idea works for the integers. Suppose you wanted to repeat the operation of addition n times on integer z. Then you would write it z+z+...+z n times as n*z, not z*n. Yes both work but that is only because integers are a commutative ring.
