Here's the thing about common core, a lot of the stuff like this example are really damn useful tricks to know. Most of us who work with numbers decently often figure these little tricks out on our own, but would never use them on numbers like this because they're simple as fuck problems. These are laughable just because they're doing them on simpler problems than they're useful for.
Part of the problem though is many of these tricks are idiosyncratic. Some are useful to some people, others not so much, and the intuitive nature of them makes them hard to teach.

Handwriting expert here (its a side thing). I can tell that the numbers and letters were written by the same person. Look at the G and the 5's. The hook on the G has the same curve as the top of the 5's. Further looking at the o the R and the 5's we see the same basic structure. The slant on the third 5 in 5+5+5 is the same as the R and the third and second five of the same series have the same "twist" on the bottom as the o. Further more the structure of the 3 and the W is exremely similar. If we turn the W 90 degrees counter clockwise it is exceedingly similar, the difference comes in that when writing a W he is basically writing a 3 from the bottom up as compared to the top down.

Lolno.
It's a concept that needs to be implemented early and often to be used effectively.
I've used this method my whole life just because that's how I've always preferred it (yes, even for multiplication). As I grew up I learned how to do more and more math without thinking. The math I still need to think about I use this method and I'm much faster than most folks at my level.
Also it is easier for multiplication in general.

Those animals probably starved a week later after they just ate all the food and complained they were hungry again.

I don't see the problem here. This passage shows objectivity both in describing the German nation post-WW2 and in accurately using empirical methods to compare two authoritarian governments. For example:
"It willingly became a dictatorship--the most evil dictatorship in recorded history. (Although the dictatorship in Soviet Russia was almost as bad."
It really makes you think...

not uplift. its a very cyncal attempt to mask differences. theyre awe what thyre doing.
whtecapes common notice is te common core MANDATED grading system. it flattens distributions. imagine now grading is out f ten points but common core changes it to a three point basis. before there was a HYGE gap between whites who score seven to ten and blacks who score two to five. Now the blacks who scored five are grouped in the same group as the hites with seven as two on a three point scale.
ALL of the problems are multiple choice OR GIVE YOU THE ANSWER.
theyve flattened the distribution of points

Arrays take about 1 minute to understand and if your higher math people have no issues understand it I don't see why it'd have to be moved down.
I don't see why kids would need to look at multiplication in an array way. If they were trying to teach them arrays then at least distinguish it from normal multiplication i.e Bob is building a cuck-shed which is 5 feet long and 6 feet wide. blah blah

What the fuck are they doing here? I had to find the answer and then look at the 'solution', only to realize they did some fuckery that's now shown or explained in any way.
I assume they're teaching kids to get to multiples of 10, then use the remainder to do the addition. However, this is just fucking retarded.
It's like they're teaching shortcuts that are only applicable for the portion of the curriculum they're on at that moment. Are they going to continue with this garbage when they get to more complex problems?
I just fucking memorized basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We had tests to drill that shit home until it was completely memorized.
It's way better to make math second nature to a kid than to have them logicking their way through these rudimentary problems.

The answer they are looking for is D as you are supposed to change 8 into 10 and 6 into 4 so you get the answer of 14. It's all about moving around the numbers into easier to manage ones and then solving the problem like that.
No you can't just add 8 to 6 you fucking racists.

>not getting it even after I give the answer
She either is giving 4 bags or 6 bags. (maybe 2 of her friends aren't sure if they can make the party)
If her 2 other friends can't make the party, she will give 4 bags. And then any multiple of 4 stickers (4 stickers => 1 sticker in each bag, 40 stickers => 10 stickers in each bag) would work.
If the other 2 friends DO come, then she will need to buy stickers in multiples of 6 to avoid leftovers.
Since she doesn't know for sure if she will need multiples of 4 or 6, she can actually buy in numbers that are multiples of BOTH 4 AND 6, which happens to be numbers 0, 12, 24, 36, etc, ie multiples of 12.
>>76156606

>Arrays take about 1 minute to understand and if your higher math people have no issues understand it I don't see why it'd have to be moved down.
Teaching something earlier allows for more to be built on top of what's already learned.
Imagine if you didn't learn addition until grade 12. You wouldn't be able to learn algebra, trigonometry, calculus etc etc
>I don't see why kids would need to look at multiplication in an array way
Arrays are used a lot in higher level math classes. The first time I ever saw an array in my life was in 10 or 11th grade and I know I would have appreciated previous experience.
> If they were trying to teach them arrays then at least distinguish it from normal multiplication
It's better to teach things in familiar terms. If they just learned multiplication it's probably easier to visualize then applying that same thought process to Bob's cuck shed.
>>76158269
>The only way that Bernard could know the date with a single number, however, would be if Cheryl had told him 18 or 19
the problem is they never say what number bernard was given, he knew the date, not the month, so it's irrelevant whether there are certain months with just ONE date given
>Bernard has deduced that Albert has either August or July. If he knows the full date, he must have been told 15, 16 or 17,
how has bernard deduced this without asking albert what month he was given? and how do we know what albert told bernard?
also, if albert and bernard are cooperating, they would simply KNOW the date fully, there would be no guessing
it's nonsense
"X" is technicaly a cross product of vectors and should not be applied on numbers...
Well, the deeper you go into math, the writing of the basic math stop being meaningful.

Kids don't fucking understand this shit. They count on their fingers and use bits of eraser to figure out math problems until they figure out how to just write it out.
This kid's being told to "Explain how he got the answer" to 17+25. This must be ruthlessly confusing to him, because to him, all he did was add. I'm sure he was instructed NOT TO SAY that all he did was add, so he had to come up with some other fucking way he came to that conclusion.
Because to normal, rational human beings, even children, simple math is simple math.
I bet they're still telling kids you won't always have a calculator as well.

Mathfag here. The goal of this is to teach conceptual understanding not just be able to compute what a calculator can do. There are math structures which are not commutative i.e. a+b !=b+a. In this case of these structures it would be the case that if you had x*y it would mean you add y a total of x times. Common core gets shit on a lot, and for the most part I agree with that its shit, my main qualm is that it assumes a one size fits all standard for all students, but the main goal in teaching concepts rather than algorithms comes from the right place.

>Arrays are used a lot in higher level math classes. The first time I ever saw an array in my life was in 10 or 11th grade and I know I would have appreciated previous experience.
Yeah but they take 1 minute to fully understand. It'll just confuse kids to have to go through that process everytime.
>It's better to teach things in familiar terms. If they just learned multiplication it's probably easier to visualize then applying that same thought process to Bob's cuck shed.
Kids are very impressionable though and you need to drill something through to them before they can move on. As long as you teach multiplication the non retarded way first I don't care how you further screw up their education.

>Teach conceptual understand not just be able to compute what a calculator can do
That's fine
For more complex math
This is 2+2
But you have to do 2-1 then take that 1 and add it to the other 2 than do 2/1 to get the other 1 and add it to 4 because 2x2 is 4 then subtract 2 from it and then you give your closest estimation to the answer. 6 is an acceptable answer because it is close enough.

I love this "change 8 into 10" stuff.
You know how you do that? By doing simple math in your head. Yet once the resulting number gets larger than 10, I guess you have to break it down into 200 steps.
It's like they're desperately trying to slow down smart kids so niggers and spics can keep up. Just slowly turn every math problem into a series of smaller problems that only deal with single digits.
I have no doubt they're doing this to meet some bullshit funding requirement where little tarbabbys need to have scores on par with white children.
