He's a good example of how the free market will create a bubble of prosperity... up until it fails, and fails hard.

Perhaps they learned something from the crisis of 1982.

can you go deeper into this?

I think he was right at the time, the country was on the verge of collapsing under comunist rule, and Allende sleeping with the soviets only meant more trouble for our little country (see cuba). he should have held elections after the coup.
Also it is generally hated here, even mentioning him in a favorable hint means you are the worst fucking person in history, and that difficults debates. I'm more interested in the historical side of things, so i tend to think about all the ordeal in a more neutral way

>>

>>

My mom's uncle was shot from an helicopter like two days after the coup while he was running from them in a field, he was a syndical leader from a land moving truckers group; my grandfather was almost killed because he was a syndical acountant or something like that, but got released for having a minor rank in the syndical stuff.
I think about all this stuff as a very important thing that changed the history of my country forever, imagine my case thousands of time, that happening is a big deal, a thing that stays imprinted in the minds of generations to come

He was pretty good

Basically, to "fix" Chile's economy Pinochet imported some economists from Chicago who implemented a series of neoliberal economic policies heavily dependent on free trade. This obviously attracted a lot of foreign investment and greatly increased the value of the Chilean peso. However this growth was unsustainable, similar to the growth policies enacted by Hjalmar Schacht to bolster the Nazi Reichsmark and the runaway growth of the Icelandic kroner in the recent Icelandic banking crisis. Basically speculation vastly inflated the value of Chile's currency, and when the currency began to flag they attempted to fix the exchange rate of the currency at its then-high value, which only accelerated its devaluation and collapse. The bubble popped in 1982, leading to widespread unemployment and poverty. It's taken many years for Chile to recover from that collapse.

Since then their economists probably realized that going whole hog on free trade is a bad idea, though they have pursued free trade agreements with countries like Mexico, and it's working out since it's being conducted on a much smaller scale and the trade is relatively equitable, since they are not relying on imported wealth from extremely wealthy countries, nor having their wealth drained by trade with a poorer country.

Between 1973-1990, the number of Chileans living in poverty doubled. After the junta fell out of power, the economy has slowly recovered. I doubt Pinochet's reforms were completely bad, but the aftermath of his neoliberal policies are definitely sobering arguments against total free trade and irresponsible growth rates

>>
>>76146453
Artifficially creating favorable speculation over currency then locking the exchange rate is not what you would call free market, it might work on the short term to recover from the Allende's mess but not in the long run since it's no different from socialism control over economy.
Don't get me wrong, he did great things and saved Chile.
