Well as a Archeological Scientist I can't say he is wrong. A lot of my colleagues refuse to believe new claims because it would invalidate the years of work they put into it.

The Maya simply didn't build their cities in locations that corresponded with the constellations. There's no way they could have done so, because the Maya civilization was a collection of independent city-states, a lot like ancient Greece; there was no central authority that could have told people, "okay, build here." And as has been correctly reported on several sites, the Maya were extremely populous at their height -- as were many of the other Precolumbian Mesoamerican civilizations -- so if you throw a dart at a map of the Yucatan you have a decent chance of hitting an undiscovered archaeological site. The claim that "the Maya ruins all line up with the stars!" only looks like it holds water if you arbitrarily ignore all the OTHER sites scattered around, and there's a lot of them.

That's fine and only involves a bit more work. You can work out the trig with the tilt and position of the earth to the sun for any given time. Ive had to do this to calculate when a satellite has flown over an area of interest. Its just another step.
He can extrapolate this idea to the solar systems general position in the Orion Arm, then calculate earths position if that much resolution is needed for predicting which stars were present and the pattern they made from an observer. Like you mentioned if any significant stars have burned out, then the pattern of the ruins will be that much harder to make out. Though, this is why he needs to ground truth.
