It just shows that using terms like "capitalism" and "socialism" is often pretty pointless, they encompass such a wide variety of ideas that they're essentially just buzzwords.
Almost everyone who considers themselves capitalist would say that yes, the government should prevent businesses from being too corrupt, or doing extreme harm to the environment. But the idea of redistributing people's wealth to pay for college, healthcare, etc? That's an entirely different matter.

I think that's true in some cases but a lot of businesses are built from the ground up by people, and the people who flip properties and buildings and physically go in and do it. There's a lot of hard working rich people and a lot of hard working poor people. There's also a lot of rich people who don't deserve to be rich and a lot of poor people who don't deserve to be poor. Life is not fair and never will be, America is not the land of justice or the same but the land of the free.

The American mindset is hyper-consumerist and embodies every part of society to the point where socialism has been reduced to "free stuff". What it really entails is the fact that yes, the cost of living will be higher and it won't be financially viable to get a new iphone every year if you're working class, although when shit hits the fan society won't let you end up on the street unless you repeatedly hit rock bottom by your own accord.
An example can be seen in Bernie (who proudly calls himself socialist) Sanders campaign. On his site he has a store with all kinds of branded shit you can buy to show your support. No one thinks about this because it's so normal in America (hell, look at all the merchandise you can get for the sports teams), it's gone so far that even certain restaurants sell their own t-shirts. This isn't a normal thing in the rest of the world.
tl;dr. American consumerism doesn't work with a socialist mindset. Socialism means spending less in a more secure society.
