I have a theory on what this actually is, if I could give it a name I would call it Subconscious Event Assumption. The idea is that, the brain has proven itself to make predictions based on information presented over time or done in repetition, as well as has been known to take external information and create or add additional information. (like that of a dream.) Our subconscious holds onto information for very long times in some cases. Over time conclusions are made on a subconscious level about different information we have received, and in theory it is not unlikely to have NEW information appended to external information (or stimuli) on a subconscious level.
The brain processes information for long periods of times and is constantly connecting dots that we aren't aware of, and these connections can some times be errors caused by our subconscious adding new material through this sort of subconscious suggestion. Our brain then files this NEW material plus EXTERNAL information and creates these memories.
The hardest part to address however, is the mass scale on which some of these happen.
Obviously the only time you get a significant measurement of the phenomenon is when it comes to common media or books, as well as celebrities births or deaths being remembered as previous events.
Ultimately, my idea doesn't fully explain the mandela effect as a psychological event because the mass population issues. But I think it creates a very important question in its place: If our brain creates new content on a subconscious level by appending to information that is processed from the outside world; is there a possibility that this newly create content can spread to other people on a sort of "subconscious link".

One of the problems with testing it is that even suggesting a discrepancy will make someone question their memory if they're hazy on the details.
