Ranger for a very popular park in a major city. Pay isn't great but I enjoy it. Generally easy, get to drive a truck around all day, bosses are cool and give me a lot of autonomy, co-workers are great, and it's rarely boring cause I never know what the fuck I'm going to see when I drive around a corner or what I'm going to deal with that day. People are fucking weird with some of the shit they do, especially hispanics.

I can't speak first hand about the situation with outsourcing, etc. in engineering, but i know that that is one factor, another complaint i've heard from a good friend of mine (nuclear engineer) is that companies generally don't want to hold onto engineers for too long, due to the expectation of increased pay, he said that he was forced to train his replacement before being laid off.
I should also mention that I went to a top 20 school (Cornell), and so these guys are pretty qualified. From what I know, there were some engineer grads from the class of a few of my friends who are doing well for themselves, but they are definitely in the minority, most are either now doing freelance work, teaching or working in a non-stem industry or an industry that's not entirely related to their major, and they're perhaps slightly overqualified for the role.
I don't foresee STEM getting any better, it seems that there has & will be an even greater influx of grads in STEM fields, and it'll turn out like law has, where there is a huge surplus of workers in an already saturated market.

Take a Electrical Craft Helper course at a trade school (free as a highschool student), which opens up a lot of apprenticeships with different jobs in the DWP of Los Angeles.
I chose Power Lineman and apprenticed for 4 years, going on 6 years now so about 2 years as a journeyman. I'd recommend it if you don't got to college.

I'm trying to do freelance now because I went to uni for a related course and good lord the people were full on liberal special snowflake sonic fans. Literally tumblrtards, spent most of tutorial time scrolling through Sherlock and Dr Who gifs not listening.
It's easy to get an art job in a small studio, mobile ones are desperate, but I know those people work there too so I'd rather take the harder, lonelier, but infinitely less liberal infested route of going it solo.
Considered architecture once but I've spent years learning to paint well and now I legit love it. The process at least, it's just the other people doing it and a lot of the time the clients are awful.

College and trades are like gambling.
You weigh your chances of landing a cushier, white college job but the stakes are higher because a lot of college grads just become wageslaves after investing 4 years and a stupid amount of time and money.
If you go trade, you say "yeah I'm comfortable with my earnings ceiling being around 150-200k" for a harder working but easier to acquire job (if you do the work)
So while 1 in 10 college grads might break through and make that 300-350k job because they're a smart ass who went aerospace engineering and had an uncle get them a job at Raytheon or something, 9/10 of them become bartenders until they're 28 then they get an office job for 45k a year.
It makes no sense to me why people wouldn't be clamoring for trades. Are the last few generation just so averse to labor? Who knows, better for us I guess.
