The creators of Superman were both left leaning (Maybe not really communists) and Superman started out as fighting for workers and protecting their rights, his red cape being a part of that ideological image. At the start he didn't actually fight against superheroes, just against the system and for justice of the oppressed.
They then sold the rights of Batman to someone else, the socialist ideology going away but the symbolism remaining.

Earth-1 Wonder Woman is another off-canon book that changed Steve Trevor from white to black, yes, but that had to deal with Morrison wanting to explore slavery and WW's BDSM fetish from when she was first introduced.

Valiant comics actually do a good job of writing characters of different ethnicities and female characters. They haven't really played the SJW card to get attention outside of that Faith miniseries but I like them. Very nice world building.
