you would think so, i mean the stakes are quite high, the amount of money you are investing is absurd, and the debt you are facing if truly frightening.
Even if you succeed that debt will be with you until you have a successful carrier.

The actual academic work isn't that stressful, but knowing you could be kicked out for any silly reason is pretty tense. As a PhD student, you're basically a slave to a particular professor.
