Gets even freakier if you imagine that the past might not even have existed. Nobody currently alive has seen the 1700s. The past/history could have been "hardcoded" into the simulation, maybe the simulation has only been running for a few centuries.

Again, you have no context to something outside this reality, right? So it is reality. In order for an illusion to exist you need context of it not existing. There is no context to this. Calling it a simulation means absolutely nothing from the perspective you are saying, it means scientifically it is possible, which really is saying nothing.

I've always tried to convince my friends that we may actually live in a simulation.
If you assume computers will constantly get faster (Moore's law), than eventually we can do Universe simulation. Now, one of these three things can happen:
> 1) We will eventually do a simulation
> 2) We can do a simulation, but we won't because of ethics (think cloning). Which means it will be done, but in secret.
> 3) We get destroyed by a comet before we can create a simulation.
If in fact, we reach the state of being able to simulate, we will keep creating new ones until one simulation/algorithm is perfect, and in which it's simulated civilisation will also be able to simulate. Keep in mind that 100 millions years in our universe, may be 10 seconds in a simulation.
Now, since that will be the only logical path, the change that we are at the top of the chain, is extremely unlikely.
It explains everything:
> If we do not encounter aliens before creating the simulation, we cannot simulate alien life because we do not know what it looks like, and therefore nobody in the simulation can find alien life, etc.
> We're created equal to God.
> Multiverse theory
> Black matter is just a parameter to fill in the blanks (and/or maybe an experimental one to prevent universe implosion)
> Deja vu's are just a bug.
> Quantum mechanics, which says an object only has a position when it's being observed. Why waste database space on a location object when it's not observed?
> The universe is endless, just think of your graphic calculator (X, Y, Z). The axes are endless, until you reach the end, then they'll expand.
> Every law of nature can be turned into a mathematical equation.

They're probably the last surviving intelligent civilization in the universe with a fleet of 10,000 spaceships inhabiting the space around what may be the last dying star in an otherwise empty, dark and cold universe.
They have probably achieved immortality and with their great arrogance cannot bear the indignity and affront to their great ego's of their current predicament of inhabiting a dead and ugly universe.
They are probably siphoning energy from this last star to power their advanced VR computers in a desperate bid to once again inhabit and enjoy a world as rich in natural beauty as our's so as to seek refuge from the terrible realization that their great lives of millions of years is about to come to an end.

>If you assume computers will constantly get faster (Moore's law),
Stopped right there friendo, Moore's law is limited by the size of components. Once you're working on an atomic scale. There's the small chance of particles phasing through shit and otherwise doing weird quantum shit which makes any calculations or code derived from it completely useless. Quantum computers are about as good as we'll ever get and they're basically already functional. Universe sim won't happen.

Can you mathematically prove that God exists? You can't.
If you took a statistics and probability course, you would believe in little green men as well.
>>75858696
You don't know what quantum computing is, do you? Quantum computing can make certain calculations faster, but we can't use it to store more information.
Say we want to simulate our universe, how much matter do we need to store all the information necessary? Obviously the entire universe. One atom can store exactly the amount of information required to simulate an atom.
Now using the universe to simulate a universe isn't exactly practical, so we need to make some approximations. As a consequence our simulation will have less computing capability than the our universe. Each successive simulation will have a reduction in capability until it is impossible to make another simulation.

Simulation is the wrong word. Our universe could be a single thought, a single idea, inside of an entity we cannot fathom, in a universe where our physical laws do not exist

Of all the stupid things about that theory, you choose to make an equally stupid point? If the universe was simulated, it wouldn't matter how fucking old you think something is. Like in a video game, there's structures that, in the context of the game world, have existed before the player character was alive, to everyone in that world (if they were self aware simulations) everything is as old as they appear to be, because they only way to test the age of something is within the simulation itself. How many hits to the head did you take as a child to think that something would have to actually be really old in a simulation for it to be perceived as really old to everyone who is a part of the simulation?

Yeah sure, til NASA gets off their asses and goes looking for it. There fucking moons in our own solar system with vast, heated oceans like our own that could be harbouring life. There's volcanic caves on mars where it's surface water likely receded after losing it's atmosphere, that could be holding life.
NASA intentionally does not go looking for life. This isn't even a conspiracy theory, on their newest probe (think it's being sent in 2020?) they genuinely refused to attatch a lab capable of detecting life while on the surface, they'd rather collect samples and analyse back on earth, after any microbial life has died and decayed on the journey back.
Personally, I think they're terrified of a religious backlash.

There are basically two possibilities: either there is no life anywhere else in the solar system, and all other worlds are dead, which would point to the universe being somewhat akin to the Atacama or death valley, and that for all intents and purposes, we are truly alone.
Or, for whatever reason, microbial life is far, far more common than scientists will openly admit, which makes it highly likely that there is varying degrees of microbial life in multiple locations throughout the solar system. The implication being, of course, that if life is so common within our solar system, then it is likely just as common elsewhere. In this case, the universe is like a South Carolina country road on a summer afternoon, bursting at the seams with all forms of life, and we are likely to be anything but alone.
Obviously, one carries much bigger implications for religion and society as a whole, and given NASA's hesitation to truly go looking for life within our solar system, I'd take that as a pretty strong indicator of which outcome they think is more likely.

Absolutely. Scientists for decades have been saying that there must be water in order for their to be life, and obviously water is very advantageous for life here, but I think it overlooks the idea of life that might potentially evolve (biologically or technologically) beyond a need for liquid water at all, something I've never once seen a scientist suggest. In my opinion, they were hoping that by making liquid water out to be this rare requirement, they could down play how likely other life is, even if it's just microbial.
But now, more recently we've found there's actually quite a lot of liquid water in the solar system, even Mars still has water on it's surface, and now they're dragging their heels going to investigate the exact thing they themselves suggest is essential to life.
Between the muslims, and the christians saying life on Earth is completely unique, there would be riots if it was ever discovered there's life in other places in this solar system alone, never mind distant planets.

>"That we live on a crust of earth which is on the back of a giant turtle,"
>Not wishing to demolish this absurd little theory by bringing to bear the masses of scientific evidence he had at his command, James decided to gently dissuade his opponent by making her see some of the inadequacies of her position.
>"If your theory is correct, madam," he asked, "what does this turtle stand on?"
>"You're a very clever man, Mr. James, and that's a very good question," replied the little old lady, "but I have an answer to it. And it is this: The first turtle stands on the back of a second, far larger, turtle, who stands directly under him."
>"But what does this second turtle stand on?" persisted James patiently.
>To this the little old lady crowed triumphantly. "It's no use, Mr. James – it's turtles all the way down."
These sorts of theories don't really add anything to our understanding of the world, it just shifts the problem of the origins of the universe to something else.
At some point you have to accept that there is just something that always was, whether that be God or "the potential for the big bang".

Life is a simulation
The dev is Kek and he shows himself trough pepe
We are the interface
It's been noticed by the developer that people have found ways to get orgasms other than the marital relationship system. Some users are even sticking their penises into the anuses of other users and putting pressure on the prostate in an attempt at these illegitimate orgasms.
These types of things ARE considered an exploit and will get your ass banned
>computer simulates an infinitely complicated universe
>requires infinite energy
>simulation then simulates an infinite universe in the simulation using infinite energy
How is it possible?
>>75862765
Zero point energy
>>75862765
It doesn't require infinite energy. Only the things that are currently being observed by conscious beings ever have to load
>>75862401
Jesus are you that fucking stupid?
Okay, here's an idea for you, imagine a new disease, scientists have no clue how it came to be, it appears to be completely unique. As far as we know, only on person on the planet currently carries this microbe. There's 7 billion people on the planet, and countless animals too. We can only prove this one man has the disease, therefore we can discount the possibility of any other living creature also having it, right?

Did you know c is a hard limit because going faster than it would allow us to mess with the integrity of the data distributed between the different computers simulating us? Did you know the planck length is a pixel and the planck time corresponds to each tick of our simulation?
I just want to thank whoever made this thread for the most interesting thread in the catalog atm.

>Did you know c is a hard limit because going faster than it would allow us to mess with the integrity of the data distributed between the different computers simulating us?
woah
>>75862876
That seems wrong, it assumes that simulations only load what consciousness can see. It also assumes that there is a finite amount of detail in that field of view.
>>75862908
Well being an unconscious NPC in your game, I don't really "know" anything, but my backstory file includes seeing those things on youtube. I also heard that when things get super massive time starts to slow down because of processing issues
>>75856158
We DEFINITELY live in a virtual-reality universe. Time slows down near black holes, this is to preserve the processing power needed to keep this virtual-reality universe in existence. Furthermore, quantum physics has proven that things don't exist in the way that we observe them UNTIL we observe them. So in other words, EVERYTHING is energetic wave-form information UNTIL we perceive it. This is so that this universe doesn't have to be rendered every second for every observer (human or otherwise).
>>75862985
Yeah but how many religious people are going to believe that in practice? The bible is very clear on god only making life on Earth

Almost every texture I had used in GTK would pop up, like it was showing me the source images I had used
>never fucking touched 3d mapping or cad because it gives me the chills

>infinitely complicated universe
Why would you assume this?
>>75862140
Basic time travel paradox. Our future selves created ourselves. Free will does not exist. From the moment the universe was created, the big bang, everything is still in motion. Everything that has happened is because of that. Everything you've done and will do is because of that. In other words, your life is already written but it's beyond your comprehension. We will transcend flesh and become God.

It doesn't have to be 1:1 though though, what if the smallest particle in the overworld is far smaller than an atom

>observe
>perceive
>for every observer (human
You're being baited by the quantum physics community. In the quantum context "observing" means that a particle has interacted with something else. That something else could be a photon or a lot of other things. Not something conscious

No, it is conscious.
>>75863198
Why wouldn't you. Is there a point where things become so small that this simulation won't bother with it? Even assuming it does, it would still require tremendous energy. And these simulations are in turn simulating simulations?
Unless our universe works in different rules to the one that made ours. I can't imagine a computer that could recursively simulate itself.
I guess you could imagine that our universe was made in such a way as to make such a simulation impossible so the simulation doesn't melt down. I dunno
>>75858491
hehe
>>75861455
If I remember correctly, Gerald Ford had a shit ton of information released that stated there are aliens and that we have made contact with them. Western governments have acknowledged that there are other beings out there.

>infinite
>tremendous energy
First of all you don't even know what kind of universe those running the simulation act in, so it does not matter anyway.
Second, you can always simplify and get accurate results.
In statistic physics you describe systems made up of an enormous amount of particles, yet using simple equations you describe how they behave very accurately.
