No. Too many people who think they are better than everyone else in one place only leads to people thinking they are above certain responsibilities. Look, I live in a socialist wonderland. And socialism isn't a system that you want leading your life. It works fine as an addition to capitalism, but no more.
And honestly, the parts of socialism that work best by far here in Quebec are the ones that are the most capitalistic. Our crown corporations like Hydro Quebec, Loto Quebec, the SAQ. All of them have clear mandates that they fill while also being profitable to extremely profitable.
So I would say that the best way to have "socialism" is to have crown corporations that take care of the necessities and vices of humans. Things like power, transport infrastructure, healthcare, water, land, education, gambling, alcohol. All of these would work under the simple mandate of providing these services to the population at an acceptable rate, accessible price, while trying to turn as much of a profit as possible if not from the residents themselves, then from outside (as Hydro Quebec does by selling power to the USA at a much higher rate than residents of Quebec, but still competitive compared to prices in the USA).
Combined with this, you can have a very minimal government, and an otherwise completely free market.

socialism only works in very small groups, like for instance - the family unit. a family with one earner and one care giver and dependent children is "socialism". the wealth is redistributed, but the other members of the family are giving social currency in return, cooking,cleaning, returning love and kindness, etc.
this can be extrapolated into a small village of 10-20 families max i'd say. men share the work work in fields/livestock... share hunting responsibilities, women communinally care for children while they perform domestic responsibilities, as well as tasks like weaving, reaping, basket/potter... you know there is always something to be done in a village. food is shared communally and as long as food stores are kept positive this socialism would work. they would even be able to absorb the non-production of elders, sick, wounded, or disabled.
it breaks down when you start throwing luxury items or any limited quantity high value goods into the mix. who gets to have? who will have not? primates brains are wired to know when you arent getting your share. the strongest males will take the limited quantity items, the betas will resent it and group together, division occurs and the system falls apart.
if you made currency only available for the "towns" use to trade for unavailable things witho other towns... and only traded for quantities of things that everyone could have without feeling left out... it might work. but then you'd have richer towns and poorer towns, the trade values of goods would fluxuate, eventually it'd break down too.

I disagree.
Socialism works perfectly fine when its crony capitalism where the government feeds the corporations and supports them with legislation. The problem is when the government itself runs a shitty business and the business turns into a public sector thing, which at least in the history in the U.S is a huge cancer in which the politicians basically promise the public sector tons of money and then act surprised they don't have money for other things or that they need to raise taxes. If anything, if the government is actively promoting the growth of businesses that are allowed to operate on free market principles then thats a great thing, because the governments policies are often very limiting to businesses.
Socialism that we are familiar with is basically turning the private sector to another public sector.
Public sectors are rife with corruption all over the world. Public sectors get guaranteed money and have little oversight if any. Public sectors are what makes socialism suck, not the number of people or the business involved.
This is why Socialism will not work, because big government invevitably means a small private sector and that means the large public sector is not allowed to fail. Constant failure is what drives the economy and is the source of American prosperity, that and buying things you could never afford and spending the rest of your life paying more for them than normal.
