I was stationed in bumfuckistan back in 011, in the middle of god-knows-where valley in the middle of winter.
It was a fucking cold ass morning when my patrol came under attack, and my friend was shot through his chest 4 times. 2 of the bullets were stopped, but he suffered tension pneumothorax. I administered first aid alongside my corpsman, released the pressure, but he succumbed to terminal shock due to the bullet severing one of his main arteries in his back. He was dead before he even hit the medevac's floor.
I stayed with him, holding his hand as his blood ran out onto the snow underneath him. My hands were cold, caked with his blood.
I blame myself for his death, and being in prolonged periods of cold with my hands exposed tends to bring back memories of it.
I can't even enjoy hunting elk anymore. I have to have someone help me with cleaning the animal.
