Check out the book The Sword of Islam. It is about the rise of Khalid, a general. It is basically split into three parts: Rise of Muhammad, Islam vs Rome, Islam vs Sassanids. Not a muslim, or religious at all, but if you love history it is a great read. It is amazing how many time Muhammad "almost" fucked up and died.
I'm about 20 pages from the Yarmouk battle and can't put it down.
Also, it is not really slanted in a serious way and mainly focuses on the battles. Google the Battle of the Ditch for another one of those "you had one job" moments.
