Daily reminder these animals give you a unique protozoan brain parasite and we have literally no idea what it does to us besides some vague hormonal biochemistry.

Daily reminder that the US government is interested in toxoplasmosa gondii and has probably done some incredibly advanced research on it to see if it can be weaponised.

Daily reminder you are blind if you don't see the consequences of this.

That's not the point. The fact t. gondii can only sexually reproduce in cats is mere coincidence.

The how bad can it be really. If there were really strong effects then they would be able to diagnose them. Cats and people have been around each other for a damn long time. If they gave us something crazy like ass cancer, then the connection would have been made.

Eat well, kitters.

The parasite also comes from other sources and other animals. Our inability to go in and kill parasites such as malaria and other chaugins, and other such bugs is not the cats fault.

All things will be better as technology increases. Nano and genetic treatments might very well bring the targeted treatment and destruction of these bugs.

That way I can enjoy pet ownership of both my cats and my dogs even more-so than before.

Over 1/4 of people in the United States have it, and even more in other countries. You get it from eating undercooked meat most of the time; being infected through cat feces is extremely rare.

It's likely the precise opposite of cancer. The parasite most probably benefits us and makes us more socially cohesive, gives us endorphin hits at the right times, testosterone when it's needed. It's theorised that the parasite has adapted its survival on humans meeting others and being social instead of being isolated. This isn't prethought by the parasite, it's simply our reaction

It doesn't hurt us, it makes us stronger. But should we ignore an organism in the world simply because it's not going to kill us in 10 years?

>Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease which predominantly affects the central nervous system and eyes; it is caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. Serological evidence shows that toxoplasmosis affects a large proportion of the world population [1]. T. gondii can only sexually reproduce in the gut of felids; however, it is capable of infecting most birds and mammals, including humans, as intermediate hosts in order to transmit to its primary host [2]. The infection can be transmitted via contact with contaminated food or soil or congenitally from mother to child. The parasite forms tissue cysts, mostly in the central nervous system and eyes of hosts, and in immunosuppressed individuals or unborn children it can lead to serious complications such as: hydrocephalus, retinochoroiditisor encephalitis [3]. In healthy individuals the disease is latent and does not cause any apparent detrimental symptoms. There is new evidence that suggests T. gondii may be capable of altering the behaviour of the intermediate host in order to favour transmission to its feline primary host [4]. It has always been assumed that toxoplasmosis is asymptomatic in healthy people and is only a threat to immunosuppressed individuals and unborn children; however, there is recent evidence which links the disease to various neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia [5, 6]. Toxoplasmosis is a globally distributed major zoonosis and research is currently being done on effective diagnosis and treatment options in both humans and cats. Important new research is also being done on the pathophysiology and possible neuropsychiatric effects of this disease.
>>
> There have been a number of studies which link toxoplasmosis with schizophrenia [5]. A large number of studies found an increased incidence of toxoplasmosis seropositivity (presence of T. gondii in serum) among patients suffering from schizophrenia [34]. A meta-analysis of these studies shows a statistically significant correlation between toxoplasmosis and schizophrenia. Furthermore, antipsychotic medications have been shown to prevent T. gondii specific behavioural changes in rats [35]. T. gondii has also been shown to affect dopamine in the brain, which is a common pathological process shared with schizophrenia [36]. A causal relationship has yet to be established; however, treatment trails which show that treatment of toxoplasmosis improves schizophrenia symptoms are likely to elucidate this link [6]. Because of the association with dopamine signalling, toxoplasmosis has also been implicated in depression [5]. This is new research and requires further investigation.

Whether or not it affects human behavior idk, but it would be interesting to find out.

Eat well kitters.

parasite infection is only a risk to pregnant women, the elderly, immune compromised, and small children. Even then you can negate it by washing your hands often.

No. The only true protection is rhesus negative blood, a mutation which some mammals developed long ago that exists only to stop the infection of toxo. But even then it won't actually stop infection.

> Rh negative blood is very rare and there are pros and cons to having this blood type. As I mentioned above, having Rh negative blood can cause problems during pregnancy for the mother and child. But it isn't necessarily all bad.

> One idea is that Rh negative people may be resistant to some of the effects of the parasite Toxoplasma. This parasite can invade our body and damage the brain, especially in babies.

> It looks like Rh negative people may be less affected by this parasite. In areas with a lot of Toxoplasma, being Rh negative might be an advantage. The less severe effects of the parasite may outweigh the effects on pregnancy.

>If latent T. gondii infections are exerting effects on human personality characteristics and behavior, what is the possible mechanism? It is known that T. gondii increases dopamine in rodents19 and also that treating the rodents with a selective dopamine uptake inhibitor differentially alters the behavior of the infected and uninfected rodents.20 Also the observed low level of novelty seeking in humans infected with Toxoplasma or cytomegalovirus is supposedly associated with high dopamine levels in the ventral midbrain.7,8 The mechanism of the dopamine increase by T. gondii is not known but may involve the inflammatory release of dopamine by increasing cytokines such as interleukin-2. The dopamine imbalance between the mesolimbic and mesocortical regions in the brain is suspected to play a role in the development of schizophrenia, which could explain the observed association between schizophrenia and toxoplasmosis.

>It is also possible that differences in the level of testosterone may be responsible for the observed behavioral differences between Toxoplasma-infected and Toxoplasma-free subjects. A lower second- to fourth-digit length ratio, greater body height in men, longer duration of pregnancy, and higher sex ratio (ie, more male births) suggest that Toxoplasma-infected subjects have a higher level of testosterone. High levels of steroid hormones have been associated with lower cellular immunity. Thus, the most parsimonious explanation of the observed high testosterone–toxoplasmosis association is a higher risk of Toxoplasma infection in subjects with higher levels of testosterone and therefore a weaker immunity. Alternatively, in an evolutionary sense, the behavioral changes induced by T. gondii could be side effects of the organism's increase in testosterone in order to impair the cellular immunity of the host and thus increase the chances of surviving in the host organism.

No, it changes your personality to care less about pain and self-harm, like people who pet cats and the cat just lashes out and scratches the shit out of them for no reason, then the person just goes back to petting them.
Its just making people more tolerant of abuse.

Toxoplasmosa Gondii is pretty damn terrifying.

Research suggests it alters human behavior. Causing you to take more risks, while also hampering your ability to react properly to the dangers that may he involved.

It may also influence attraction to potential mates.

Some research suggests that the parasite actually alters foetal development. Giving a child who's parent was infected, specific traits. Which someone who is infected will subconsciously pick up on and find attractive.

The studies into this parasite, are pretty damn terrifying.

I also find it very odd, that almost no cat owners are aware of it/ go into automatic defence mode when an attempt to explain is made.

I have a cat and I am aware of it. If I am a host, I have no means to rid myself of them. I also have no reasonable means to convince a government or health organization to address this issue.

It changes the behaviour of mice and makes them want to be around cats so they can be eaten and the parasite can spread.
It affects us too even though we can't be killed by house cats. I think it's making people sexually attracted to their pets and the root cause of the degenerate furry epidemic.

It only reproduces in the gut of a cat, so it's in their poop.

You can get it from anywhere and anyone. On the bus, in the toilets, on your way to work, pushing the button on the elevator... Anything you can think of.

If there's a cat living nearby, you are most likely infected. Almost everyone living in a city for more than a year will also be infected.

I don't need to get tested, its too expensive anyway. I know I have it, it's only going to benefit me in the long run and I'm certainly not thinking of getting rid of it because of everything I've read. I loved cats before getting it and I only love them even more now.
>>
>>75671289

Everybody has h. pylori. It's part of the gut flora. It only becomes problematic if it gets out of control, but usually this is just a consequence of something else (i.e. gut flora being disrupted by medications), not the root cause.
Anyway, hope you get better soon!
