Trump would want to appear reasonable to Sanders supporters and at the same time somehow hold true to his own positions. A difficult juggling act for a strong debater. Trump is a decent speaker, but he's done a lousy job of making his arguments clear in the past. Plus, I doesn't imagine the bully tactics (plz no bully) he used on Jeb and the like would work on Sanders.
If Trump and Sanders were to collude, Hillary could look far worse as a result. But it's more likely they'll damage one another, and Hillary will benefit.
Still, I'm disappointed. I'm keen on both Trump and Sanders. A debate may have been interesting. Especially if they nixed the 90 seconds to answer bullshit and allowed extended responses.

Your post is interesting. Assuming what you say is true, how is it that Sanders can still publicly clamor for debate, but Trump was obligated to back down? Also, Trump's entire short political history consists of appeals to common sense rather than following establishment expectations. If he saw benefit in a debate with Sanders, I expect he'd press on, secret DNC/RNC rules be damned.
