Whether it's due to "brain chemical imbalances" is very dubious though. 90% of depression is probably due to bad life decisions, diet, various deficiencies, lethargy, lack of hobbies, sitting around in bed wallowing and not socializing enough, while anxiety is almost certainly more related to experiences in infancy, setting up the life long imprint of safety vs. danger in the exterior world.

Nobody is denying that. Mental illness occurs when the brain can't correct the imbalance, either because it's stuck in a feedback loop (clinical depression) or because part of the brain simply doesn't work in the first place (gender identity disorder).

The problem is just that it's horrifically overdiagnosed, partially because it's good money for shrinks and drug manufacturers, partially because it can be used to discredit people who have every fucking right to be depressed or angry at the world.
