The 'Deep North' section of New England (VT, NH, ME) is great. New Hampshire is the best state in New England easily, I'd move back there instantly if there the jobs there were better than Boston.

There are good careers in those areas, but it's niche so it can be tricky to do what you actually want in your career. My sister works as a graphic designer out of manchester and she would have 500% more career opportunities in NYC/Boston. She basically gets subcontracted to smaller businesses. Where if you live near a big city you can basically do whatever you want for work.
