I remember reading from somewhere a hypothesis that male/female voting patterns are based on reproductive success strategies in tribal societies.
Basically the strategy for women is to try and ensure the tribe takes care of all of its children, even those that are of limited utility to the tribe. In other words there is a cooperative tendency for women to work together to make sure everyone is taken care of. That supposedly is based on the greater investment from women in childbearing and the need to mitigate risk.
While men on the other hand tend to pursue a strategy that places the well being of the tribe as a whole over its less useful members. This works to ensure the tribe's dominance over other tribes and by that logic dominance over the other tribe's women, which aids men's reproductive success.
Granted evolutionary psychology theories can be risky to lean on too much. But it might explain overall trends in voting patterns between men and women over a period of generations.
