He pulled the kid up into the enclosure. The moat runs the length of the front of the gorillas habitat. There is a still picture of the kid sitting in the exhibit.

The zoo staff obviously didn't want to shoot the gorilla. But really he could have hurt the kid at any minute with all the commotion, gorillas are unpredictable as fuck. If they didn't shoot it and the kid got hurt they would have got in a lot more shit

Actually gorillas are the most calm of the great apes.
Also, it wasn't a young male, which means that as long as it doesn't see the kid as a threat to its ape family, it won't really do much.
The biggest problem was the people screaming at it, because it was stressing it out.
Generally it was just showing curious behavior, but it obviously identified it as a child.
