I work in a high school that has a student court, which is a restorative justice kinda idea. Rather than suspend the kid, they have the kid go in front of their peers, explain themselves, and then have a restorative plan (normally community service hours) instead of the normal suspension.
At least in my experience, kids almost always are on their best behavior for the actual proceedings, and very rarely fill out the community hours. Most end up suspended anyway.
My question, then, is: if these kids, who are being suspended for cutting class, are unwilling to put in the time to do this, then how should we expect a criminal, someone who has committed a grave and heinous crime, to go "help out in the community" as part of their penance?

The problem here is when people of the same opinions group together and circlejerk. What then happens is that a race starts to be the most "extreme" as possible, and say the most provocative thing within the line of reasoning perceived as "right" at the time. Even if you think right wing death squads are wrong, there's nothing whatsoever wrong with people saying they want death squads. People saying they want death squads are part of open debate. Likewise there's nothing wrong with people saying "lets close all the prisons". The correct response in both cases is to say: That's wrong and fucking stupid, and this is why it's wrong and fucking stupid.
The problem becomes when politically powerful organizations cut out everyone willing to say "no, that's wrong and fucking stupid. This tends to follow from efforts to stop people saying things that the organization acknowledges is wrong and fucking stupid. For example, a left wing organization saying

Anyway so i was saying - basically the way you know your organization is healthy is that you have a few death squad/prison shutdown chucklefucks around to keep everyone else from spinning out of control.

Prisons are an outdated relic of the colonial past further advanced by the efforts of wealthy cronies in the 19th century.
There's nothing dumber than punishing someone by placing them in a cage for a certain amount of time. Not to mention it's a waste of funds and inhumane.
Justice should be swift and effectual, similar to Sharia law. Corporal punishment, fines/restitution and/or community service and death should be the only things people are sentenced to and jails should be used to hold at risk suspects awaiting trial and people with an immediate likeliness to reoffend as in the case of child molesters.
Police should be dissolved and militias restored and they should be placed in charge of handling only serious crimes while pettier issues are left alone to be resolved by the public. This should be coupled with a reaffirmation of the citizens' right to bear arms.
Also our justice system should be restored to being a court and not the exploitative extortion scheme that it's become now.
The long running charade of a uniformed reformatory will come to an end as more people wake up to the knowledge of it's uselessness in dealing with crime and will be replaced by something more purposeful.
