The idea of windows 10 was to unify the tablet / smartphone experience so that users could move between both PC and smartphones/tablets smoothly.
It's not an evil idea and given the explosive growth of smartphones and tablets it made sense from a marketing standpoint.
However the sad truth is that windows no longer cares about a pure desktop experience.
Also the data synching stuff was idea that someone on a smartphone would be able to have access to a larger amount of data than the device itself could hold.

Download Windows 8.1 on a USB with installer. Make sure you can install it. Also install an anti-windows 10 update app, just google "Remove windows 10 update" find an exe app.
Also do some searching like Windoiws 8.1 security updates to block.

I don't really do anything on it other than some gaming, but when get around to my next build I'm planning using Linux exclusively from that point on.

Mint devs have had terrible coding practices for years now. Shit like using naming conventions that break packages from other distros, being slow with updates and being non-compliant with security standards. That hack was just a symptom of bigger underlying problems with Mint- it's pretty much maintained by hobbyists after all.
Even though I really loved Mint at one point, I wouldn't recommend it anymore. Just use some flavor of Ubuntu(I like Lubuntu), disable Amazon integration(if any) and then install whatever packages you need.

The fucking day I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, I immediately disabled all updates, I downloaded every script and file I could to disable all their updates and other spying shit, not just turning stuff off in control panel but properly removing cancerous code at the roots, I can't even remember all the shit I did now but I spent a long time scrubbing it because I knew shit like this would happen one day, and these days I am glad I did so.
That was fucking like 5-6 years ago and both my W7 PC's have never had any problems and I've never been asked to update to W10 at all.
I will use W7 forever.
