Woody Guthrie being a communist is different than most cases. You have to take into account he started writing music during the Great Depression. His entire state's economy was destroyed and Oklahomans weren't treated well when they went to California. It was a situation where people were looking for work and couldn't find it.
It's a much different situation than now. Woody Guthrie was a great poet.
